APP Chicago Open Men’s Singles Recap: Dominance Continued

APP Chicago Open Men’s Singles Recap: The Labor Day weekend brought the Association of Pickleball Players (APP) back to its roots with the 2024 Zimmer Biomet Chicago Open. Founded in Chicago in 2019 by Ken Herrmann, the APP has called the Windy City its home ever since. However, a move to “The Fort” in Fort Lauderdale is on the horizon, where a state-of-the-art complex will soon serve as the APP’s new headquarters and host future tournaments.

For now, the APP held its fifth annual Chicago Open at Danny Cunniff Park in Highland Park, continuing a tradition that started in 2021. This event was not only a regular tour stop for the APP’s top professionals but also marked the sixth tournament in the Humana Cup Series for the tour’s Champions pros.

Dominance on Display: Men’s Pro Singles Recap

The Men’s Pro Singles bracket saw No.1 seed Christopher Haworth continue his strong run on the APP tour. Having already captured three singles titles out of his last four appearances, Haworth advanced to the final in commanding fashion. He faced a tough test in the quarterfinals against No.8 seed Zane Ford, needing three games to secure his win.

However, Haworth showed his dominance in the semifinals by defeating No.12 seed Eric Oncins with a decisive 15-4, 15-4 victory. The ease with which Haworth dispatched his opponent in rally scoring is equivalent to an 11-1, 11-2 win in traditional scoring—an impressive feat.

A Rivalry Renewed: The Final Showdown

In the final, Haworth faced his doubles partner and young rival Grayson Goldin in a rematch of the APP NYC Open final held in May. The two battled in a thrilling match that saw Haworth edge out Goldin with tight scores of 15-13 and 16-14, securing his third consecutive singles title on the APP tour and his fifth for the year.

Tournament Results

  • Gold: Christopher Haworth
  • Silver: Grayson Goldin
  • Bronze: Jack Foster
