Night Owls Secure Season Opener with DreamBreaker Win: In an exciting start to their 2024 season at the MLP tournament in Washington, D.C., the Las Vegas Night Owls grabbed victory in an exciting DreamBreaker against the Brooklyn Aces, setting a winning tone for their campaign.
The Night Owls, guided by Chao Yi (Zoey) Wang, Judit Castillo, Mohaned Alhouni, and Anderson Scarpa, faced a closely contested battle right from the start. The match remained evenly balanced, with each singles round tied at 4-4, resulting in both teams being deadlocked at 16-16 overall.
The crucial moment was when Scarpa turned the tide with three of the next four points against Daniel de la Rosa, pushing Las Vegas ahead 19-17. Castillo sealed the deal by scoring the final two points against Lina Padegimaite, securing a thrilling victory for the Night Owls.
While this victory marks the Night Owls’ first match of the season, it also served as a memorable debut for newcomers Wang and Alhouni in MLP competition. Wang, the No. 8 overall draft pick, expressed her excitement and nerves about stepping onto the MLP stage for the first time alongside her supportive teammates.
“I was kind of nervous for my first match, but it was really exciting with my teammates, I loved that they were cheering for me, and that helped me to just go for it.”–Wang
Looking ahead, Las Vegas will carry this momentum into their next challenge against the Florida Smash later Thursday evening, aiming to build on their opening success. Meanwhile, the Brooklyn Aces will regroup during their break until Saturday, gearing up to face the Miami Pickleball Club as they seek to bounce back from their narrow defeat to the Night Owls.
