Get Ready for Pickleball Madness: PPA’s First Tournament in Tucson Kicks Off Soon

PPA’s First Tournament in Tucson: The Professional Pickleball Association (PPA) is set to host its inaugural tournament in Tucson from February 5 to 9. Fans will have the chance to watch and play alongside some of the best pickleball players in the world, including University of Arizona alumnus Augie Ge.

Augie Ge: A Local Star Returns Home

Phoenix native Augie Ge expressed his excitement about returning to Tucson, where he previously played for the University of Arizona’s tennis team. “I went to college in Tucson so I’m excited to be back,” Ge said. He played one season for Arizona, highlighting the special experience of representing his hometown team.

After completing his college career, Ge earned a master’s degree at Brown University. Upon returning to Phoenix, he reconnected with friends from his junior tennis days, many of whom had transitioned to pickleball. “A lot of my buddies from junior tennis were playing pickleball,” Ge explained. “I wanted to reconnect with everyone.”

Ge’s Journey to Professional Pickleball

Ge initially balanced playing in pro tournaments with a full-time job. However, a layoff prompted him to dedicate more time to pickleball. “I just figured instead of immediately trying to get a new job, maybe I’ll just try to play a little more pickleball in the meantime because I love it so much,” he stated. Ge turned professional in 2024 and joined the PPA.

PPA CEO Connor Pardoe noted that Tucson was an easy choice for the tournament’s location. He emphasized that PPA events offer a unique experience compared to other sports. “It’s less of going to a Phoenix Suns game, more of going to a pickleball festival,” Pardoe said.

Exciting Events and Activities for Fans

The tournament will feature 150 elite players, including renowned athletes like Ben Johns, Anna Leigh Waters, and Ge himself. Ge highlighted the accessibility of professional players at the event. “All the pros are super friendly and super accessible as well,” he said. “You can literally go up to Ben Johns or Tyson McGuffin and just ask for a picture and autograph. They’ll have a conversation with you. Everyone is so nice.”

In addition to watching their favorite players compete, fans will have the opportunity to participate in the festivities. More than 1,000 amateur pickleball players are expected to compete, ensuring that there is something for everyone. “There’s something for every pickleball player to do,” Pardoe noted. “It really creates a whole week of pickleball madness, with music, drinks, and everything pickleball.”

Anticipation Builds for the Tucson Open

The Tucson Open promises to be an exciting event, showcasing the growing popularity of pickleball while allowing fans to engage directly with their favorite players. Set to take place at the Tucson Racquet and Fitness Club, this tournament represents a significant milestone for both the PPA and the local pickleball community. With its unique blend of professional competition and festive atmosphere, the Tucson Open is expected to be a memorable experience for all attendees.
