Fahey and Frazier Handle Chaotic Play

Kate Fahey, who will get married next week, stayed focused despite her busy schedule. After making the women’s singles final on Thursday, she and Dylan Frazier won four mixed doubles matches on Friday, ending the day with a semifinal victory. Their biggest challenge was adjusting to the unpredictable style of Layne Sleeth and Riley Newman, who frequently switched sides during rallies.

“Against a team that switches it up a lot, you’ve got to keep your head on a swivel and make sure you and your partner are on the same page, depending on what orientation they’re in. Kate and I usually are on the same page, so it worked out.”(Dylan Frazier)

Injury Scare for Riley Newman

The second game included a tense moment when Riley Newman fell while chasing a ball and appeared to injure his lower body. Trailing 3-6 at the time, Newman took a medical timeout before returning to finish the match. His status for Saturday’s men’s doubles event with Jay Devilliers remains uncertain.

Kate Fahey shared how difficult it can be to face an injured opponent.

“I think it’s sometimes harder playing someone that’s injured because you just want to put the ball in play, but Layne and Riley are so good that you can’t just put the ball in play.

I actually thought they played really well after the injury, so we just had to stick to the game plan. We didn’t really change anything; we were trying to move our dinks around, and I think we were successful enough at that.”

A Team on the Rise

This tournament marks only the fourth time Kate Fahey and Dylan Frazier have played together, but they have quickly built a strong record. Earlier this season, they earned a bronze medal in Tucson. Their Sacramento run ensures at least a silver medal and gives them another chance to capture a title.
