Former world No 1 Kim Clijsters has responded to Emma Raducanu’s recent decision to end her partnership with coach Francisco Roig and emphasized the need for the British player to establish a longer-term coaching relationship. Raducanu and Roig, who previously coached Rafael Nadal, worked together from August last year until their split at the end of January.
After Raducanu’s second-round exit at the Australian Open, she revealed a mismatch with her performance during the tournament. In an Instagram post, Raducanu expressed gratitude towards Roig for their time together, stating,
“Francis, thank you for our time together. You have been more than a coach to me and I will cherish the many good times we spent together on the court.”
She continued,
While we have come to the conclusion together that we ought not to move forward, please know that I am very grateful for all you have taught me and fond of our time shared.
Raducanu’s Coaching History and Current Challenges
Ranked 30th in the world, Raducanu has experienced working with eight permanent coaches during her professional career so far. The frequent changes raise questions about who is guiding her decisions in these transitions. Speaking on the Love All podcast, Clijsters expressed concern over whether Raducanu herself or others, such as her agent or parent, are orchestrating these quick coaching changes.
Clijsters noted,
To me, I’m curious when I hear those kind of headlines, who is making those decisions,
and she added,

“Is she (Raducanu) doing it? Is it an agent? Is it a parent?”
She also questioned the haste in deciding to part ways with coaches given Raducanu’s history of working with notable trainers. Clijsters explained,
“There’s a lot of things that I’m curious in that situation about. Who is making these decisions for her? Who pushes the panic button so quickly?”
The former Grand Slam champion also highlighted the importance of patience in developing a player’s skills, saying,
“Because she’s had some really good coaches that she’s worked with in the past, and coaches that are like what I’ve mentioned earlier, who want to take their time, who know that it takes time to build and make changes to a technique and to a tactical gameplan. Like, it takes time to work on that.”
Looking Ahead for Raducanu’s Career Development
As Raducanu navigates the next phase of her career, the focus will likely turn to her ability to find a stable coaching arrangement that supports long-term growth. Consistency in coaching has often been key to the sustained success of professional tennis players, and Clijsters’ comments underline this reality.
Questions about decision-making and the pressure to react quickly to setbacks will remain critical issues as Raducanu seeks to fulfill her potential in major tournaments. Her coaching choices could determine how effectively she adapts and improves on the tennis court in the coming seasons.
