Venus Williams, the seven-time Grand Slam singles champion, has accepted a wild card to participate in the upcoming ATX Open in Austin later this month. At 45 years old, she will compete in both singles and doubles at the WTA 250 event, which takes place on outdoor hard courts at the Westwood Country Club. This marks Williams’ first appearance at the tournament, highlighting her ongoing commitment to the sport despite recent challenges.
Challenges and Recent Matches on Tour
Williams made her return to the WTA Tour last July in Washington, D.C., where she secured a victory over Peyton Stearns in her opening match. However, since then, she has encountered a difficult stretch, losing six matches consecutively. This 2024 season began with losses to Magda Linette in Auckland and Tatjana Maria in Hobart. Her most recent singles appearance was a tough three-set match against Olga Danilovic in the first round of the Australian Open on January 18.
Strong Performance in Doubles Play
Although she has faced setbacks in singles, Venus Williams has maintained resilience in doubles competition. She reached the quarterfinals of the US Open last year paired with Leylah Fernandez. More recently, she teamed up with Elina Svitolina in Auckland and Ekaterina Alexandrova in Melbourne, though both partnerships were eliminated in the first round of their tournaments.
Competitive Field at the ATX Open
The ATX Open will showcase a strong field of American talent, including the defending champion Jessica Pegula, rising star Iva Jovic, last year’s runner-up McCartney Kessler, Ashlyn Krueger, and Peyton Stearns. The tournament is scheduled from February 23 to March 1, serving as a key event leading up to the prestigious tournaments at Indian Wells and Miami.
Williams Expresses Enthusiasm for Austin Event
“I’m so excited to be heading to Austin and playing my first ATX Open. The city has such great energy and I’ve heard the fans are incredible. I’m looking forward to playing both singles and doubles in front of such a passionate tennis community,”
Williams shared.
Current Rankings and Outlook
Currently ranked No. 549, Venus Williams is navigating a challenging phase in her career with a 0-3 record this season. Her participation in the ATX Open offers an important opportunity to gain momentum as she continues competing at the professional level. The tournament’s timing, just before prominent stops in Indian Wells and Miami, will be crucial for Williams as she aims to regain form and compete amongst the top players once again.
