Qinwen Zheng Admits Focus Woes Cost Win vs Rybakina

Qinwen Zheng’s impressive comeback in Qatar came to a close on Tuesday after a hard-fought loss against Elena Rybakina. Zheng initially took the first set 6-4 but was quickly countered by the Australian Open winner, who claimed the second set 6-2. In the final set, Zheng rallied from 2-5 to level the score before ultimately dropping the last two games.

Despite falling just short, Zheng’s performance was commendable, especially considering she had been away from competitive tennis for nearly five months. Her effort against Rybakina, one of the sport’s top players currently, highlighted her resilience and potential.

Analysing the Impact of Focus Issues in Zheng’s Match Against Rybakina

After the match, Zheng addressed her challenges with maintaining concentration throughout the contest against the two-time Grand Slam champion. Speaking to reporters in Doha, she said,

“I think the problem is during a match I have some up-and-down focus and suddenly I lose concentration for a long time,”

adding,

“I hope (by) playing more matches this will get better. (I’m) always looking for things to improve, and that’s what I see from this week.”

Zheng’s statistics against Rybakina present a mixed picture: she served nine aces and won 70% of her first-serve points while claiming 55% on second serve and converting two of five break-point chances. However, she also served six double faults, a number she will aim to reduce going forward. Rybakina, in comparison, produced six aces with only one double fault and converted four of ten break opportunities.

Upcoming Challenges for Rybakina in the Qatar Open

Elena Rybakina is set to meet Victoria Mboko in the quarter-finals. Mboko, the 2025 Canadian Open champion, earned her spot after a gruelling round of 16 match against Mirra Andreeva. If Rybakina advances, potential semi-final opponents include Jelena Ostapenko or Elisabetta Cocciaretto. The final could see her face one of several top contenders: Iga Swiatek, Maria Sakkari, Karolina Muchova, or Anna Kalinskaya.

Prospects for Qinwen Zheng’s Grand Slam Ambitions This Year

At 23, Zheng possesses the talent required to claim a Grand Slam title, though questions remain about whether she can capitalize on that potential. She reached the 2024 Australian Open final and carries the experience of being an Olympic gold medalist. These achievements offer a strong platform for success.

Zheng’s next major opportunity will come at the French Open. Last season, she advanced to the quarter-finals by overcoming Victoria Mboko and Liudmila Samsonova before falling to Aryna Sabalenka. With her current form showing promise despite recent setbacks, Zheng is poised to be a significant threat in upcoming Grand Slam events.
