Alexandra Eala Shocks Top-10 Again with Dubai Win

The Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships saw a stunning upset on Tuesday night as Filipina tennis player Alexandra Eala defeated sixth seed Jasmine Paolini in straight sets. The 20-year-old’s victory marks a significant moment in her career and highlights her growing status as a formidable competitor against top-ranked opponents.

Eala dominated Paolini 6-1, 7-6(5), securing her first Top-10 win of 2026 and advancing to the Round of 16 in Dubai for the first time. This result adds to her reputation as a rising star capable of challenging the sport’s elite players.

A Breakthrough Victory Over a Formidable Opponent

From the start, Alexandra Eala took control of the match, winning the opening set with authority. She rapidly gained the upper hand, moving ahead by a set and a break. However, Paolini, a former Dubai champion, intensified her fight in the second set. Despite facing three match points while trailing 3-5, Paolini managed to win three consecutive games and led 6-5, shifting the momentum temporarily in her favor.

Showing remarkable composure under pressure, Eala held her serve to force a tiebreak. After missing a match point at 6-4 in the tiebreak, she clinched the match with a decisive forehand winner on her fifth opportunity following a 1 hour and 40 minutes battle.

Reflecting on the tension of the closing stages, Eala said,

“All of the emotions are coming because the tension was so high, especially during that second set, so I’m really happy to have gotten through. She’s a great opponent, obviously being Top 10 and a former champion here in Dubai, so to be able to compete at this level with her is a great achievement for me.”

Eala acknowledged the important role that support from fans played during the intense moments.

“In the tie-break, I was trying everything to keep myself in check. In the change of ends, I was thinking about how this stadium is full of Filipinos, and I thought of how many of them were probably praying for me to win! So I knew that I had to give everything I had,”

she shared.

Statistical Dominance and Career Impact

Throughout the match, Alexandra displayed outstanding serve efficiency, winning 86% of her first-serve points. She also maintained an advantage in key exchanges, finishing with a 7-2 edge in winners over Paolini. This win lifts her career record against Top-10 opponents to three wins and two losses, all of her victories being straight-set triumphs. Prior to Dubai, Eala had defeated elite players Madison Keys and Iga Swiatek during her breakthrough performances in Miami last year.

Her aggressive baseline game, combined with impressive mental toughness, have become defining strengths for the young player. Up next, she will face Romanian Sorana Cîrstea, who progressed to the third round after a straight-sets victory over Linda Noskova.

With this momentum, Alexandra Eala appears poised to continue making her mark in major competitions and strengthen her reputation as a Top-10 giant-killer.

The Broader Significance of Eala’s Rise in Women’s Tennis

Jasmine Paolini, despite her defeat, praised Eala’s growing influence on and off the court. Prior to their match, Paolini emphasized the importance of Eala’s rising popularity for the sport’s global reach, especially in Asia where tennis continues to expand its fanbase. Though Eala has yet to secure a WTA title, she has already accumulated over 200 career match wins and reached a career-high ranking of No. 40, currently sitting at No. 47.

Paolini remarked on the energy Eala brings to tournaments worldwide, saying,

“I think it’s really important to have people from all around the world playing tennis.”

She added,

“Somebody like Alexandra Eala, it’s a huge thing for tennis. I think it’s great to have many, many fans also coming in tournaments where usually there are fewer people. Like Abu Dhabi was full of people watching Eala. I also remember the first match in Doha; you could hear from outside the court people cheering for her. It’s great. I think also for the generation that is coming after that, for tennis. We all know Asia has a big population, so a lot of people that can come to tennis can support us, can support our sport as well.”

Tournament organizers in Dubai also recognized Eala’s growing appeal. Salah Tahlak, tournament director, highlighted how her presence captivates both local spectators and international audiences, boosting excitement wherever she competes.

Alexandra Eala’s Recent Form and Prospects

Eala’s 2026 season began with mixed results, including a semifinal appearance in Auckland and an early exit at the Australian Open. She bounced back with quarterfinal showings in Manila and Abu Dhabi but suffered an early loss in Doha. Currently, she holds a 7-5 win-loss record for the season on the WTA tour.

Her stunning Top-10 victory in Dubai reinforces the narrative that Alexandra Eala is not only a promising talent but also a trailblazer tapping into new markets and fan demographics, shaping the future of women’s tennis internationally.
