Jessica Pegula Hails Strength of Women’s Tennis After Dubai Win

Jessica Pegula has continued her impressive 2024 season by securing another WTA 1000 title at the Dubai Championships. The American, now ranked fifth in the world, has experienced a remarkable ascent in her career, moving from struggling outside the top rankings at age 25 to establishing herself firmly among the elite at 31. Her recent performances have sparked hopes that a Grand Slam championship might soon be within her reach, as she demonstrates resilience against the deep talent on the WTA Tour.

Assessing the Competitive Landscape Following Several Withdrawals in Dubai

During a post-tournament press conference, Pegula addressed the topic of numerous withdrawals that shaped the women’s draw in Dubai this year. With prominent players such as Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek pulling out before play began, and others including Elena Rybakina, Victoria Mboko, and Karolina Muchova retiring mid-event, critics questioned the strength of the competition. Pegula, however, emphasized that despite these absences, the tournament maintained a high standard of play.

“Yeah, I mean, I was looking at the draw actually. We talked about all these withdrawals. But, I mean, like, we had four top-10 girls in the semis. We had a few more in the quarters. It just shows you the depth of women’s tennis. It just shows you the level is so high week in and week out. Even when you have a lot of players withdrawing, just because we’re missing a few, it doesn’t mean that we still can’t put on some great tennis,”

Pegula stated.

Challenges Faced on the Road to Victory and Tour Demands

Reflecting on her path to the trophy, Pegula noted the stiff competition she overcame despite the reduced field. Her route involved facing and defeating multiple top-10 opponents, underscoring the tournament’s competitive intensity. She described her matches as far from easy, highlighting the tour’s demanding nature, particularly in back-to-back events with short recovery time.

“I think we did that especially last night with some really good matches. The night before, my draw was very hard; it was a really tough draw. I was able to beat a couple top-10 players along the way. It definitely was not a cakewalk by any means,”

she added.

Speaking about the recurring challenges facing players week after week, Pegula remarked:

“Like you say, it shows the depth of the game right now. It’s not easy. It’s hard every single week, every single day. Especially in these shorter events where you’re coming back-to-back days, having to battle right away. Not just battle anybody, but girls that are really, really good.”

“Yeah, super proud of the state our sport is in right now. I think it’s super strong.”
