Emma Raducanu will reunite with coach Mark Petchey for the Indian Wells tournament after parting ways with her ninth coach, Francisco Roig. The reunion follows Raducanu’s decision to end her brief coaching stint with Roig and return to Petchey, who previously helped her reach the Miami Open quarter-finals. Although Petchey is unlikely to resume a full-time coaching role, their collaboration is set to continue at this key WTA event.

Former British player Tim Henman criticized Raducanu’s move, labeling it a “mistake,” despite Petchey’s prior positive influence on her results. Laura Robson, however, has offered a different perspective, suggesting that too much focus is placed on the coaching changes rather than Raducanu’s overall confidence and happiness on court, which she believes is most important.

Laura Robson shared insights into the significance of coaching in professional tennis, emphasizing that maintaining confidence during matches is critical. Speaking to Sky Sports, Robson stated,

“I think we make such a big deal out of the coaching situation and as long as she is feeling happy on the court, as long as she’s confident out there then that’s half the job done, and that’s what coaches try and bring out in you when you do have one.”

Robson believes that Raducanu’s strong relationship with Petchey could foster improved performances on the tour.

Discussing the future of Raducanu’s coaching, Robson explained that familiarity between player and coach can be a powerful asset. She said,

“She obviously gets on really well with Petch. They’ve been on and off for a fair few years now and it’s someone she knows. They have the same ideas.”

Robson added that their shared vision for Raducanu’s style of play benefits her development. She noted the importance of having a coach handle logistical matters such as arranging practice sessions and equipment maintenance, allowing Raducanu to concentrate solely on her performance.

“As long as that’s taken care of, then you can just focus on trying to play. They have the same identity of how both of them feel she should be as a player.”

Raducanu enters the Indian Wells tournament as a seeded player, which grants her a bye in the first round, further setting the stage for a potentially deep run.
