Martina Navratilova believes that opponents have uncovered the vulnerabilities of Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff, leading to their challenging beginnings to the 2026 tennis season. Both athletes, who have previously set high standards, have recorded unexpected losses: Swiatek suffering four defeats in 13 matches, including a quarter-final exit at the Australian Open, and Gauff similarly dropping four of 14 contests, with early exits in Melbourne, Qatar, and Dubai.
The former champion suggested that competitors have adapted tactically to the styles of Swiatek and Gauff, which has contributed to the duo’s recent difficulties in maintaining their dominance on the court.
Changing Dynamics in Matches Against Swiatek and Gauff
Speaking ahead of the Indian Wells Masters, Navratilova highlighted a shift in match competitiveness.
“I think for both Iga and Coco, the matches that they used to win easily, they’re now winning sometimes with difficulty, or losing. It doesn’t take much to have that happen,”
she remarked.
She emphasized how even tight scorelines mask the underlying tactical improvements of their opponents:
“What’s the final scoreline, maybe 6-4, 6-4, but it’s only 100 points to 94. I think the other players are beginning to figure out how to beat them because they have the tools now to get the tactics right.”
Navratilova added that rivals have acclimated to the challenging styles of Swiatek and Gauff during practice, no longer finding their top-spin weapons unfamiliar. This adaptation enables rivals to strengthen weaker shots strategically.
They can plug those holes where they’re uncomfortable with a particular shot, the forehand or the backhand and build that confidence.
Sabalenka’s Rising Advantage amid Her Competitors’ Struggles
Navratilova’s analysis may serve as encouragement for Aryna Sabalenka, who appears set to extend her lead over Swiatek and Gauff as the season unfolds. The nine-time Wimbledon champion also praised Sabalenka’s technical improvements, particularly regarding her serve, contrasting it with Gauff’s ongoing issues.

On Sabalenka’s transformation, Navratilova noted:
Technically, Sabalenka was all over the map with her technique when she was double faulting, now she’s got that solved.
Conversely, she identified Gauff’s struggles as primarily mental despite having sound technique:
With Coco, as far as I can see, the technique is fine. Sometimes it can become mental when the technique is okay. It gets into your head because you’re supposed to be in control.
As soon as you think: ‘I don’t want to double fault’, you double fault. It’s a self-fulfilling prophecy. When you’re confident, that thought doesn’t come into your head. She’s only 21, I think she’ll get it straightened out.
Upcoming Indian Wells Masters Stakes
All three players—Sabalenka, Swiatek, and Gauff—are preparing to challenge defending champion Mirra Andreeva at the Indian Wells Open, which is scheduled to take place later this week. Their performances in this high-profile event could reshape the competitive hierarchy for the remainder of the season as players strive to claim supremacy and build momentum.
With the clear Aryna Sabalenka advantage emerging amidst the uncertainties surrounding Swiatek and Gauff, this tournament represents a critical opportunity to establish dominance.
