Madison Keys Furious After Pegula Withdrawal Costs ATX Spot

Madison Keys expressed intense frustration after Jessica Pegula’s withdrawal from the ATX Open denied her a spot in the tournament draw. Pegula, who recently secured the Dubai Tennis Championships title, withdrew late from the event, leaving Keys unable to participate once again. This marks the second consecutive year that Keys has been blocked from competing at the ATX Open due to ranking restrictions.

Following her early exit at the Australian Open, Keys chose to skip both WTA 1000 events in the Middle East swing—the Qatar Open and Dubai Tennis Championships—to focus on the ATX Open in Austin. However, the WTA rules allowing only one top 10 player per WTA 250 event meant Pegula, ranked No. 5, was given priority over Keys, who holds the No. 15 position. Pegula’s late withdrawal came too late for Keys to be reinstated, intensifying her disappointment.

Despite Pegula’s exit, the tournament rules prevented Keys from taking her place because she remained ranked inside the top 10 at the entry deadline. Both players discussed this situation during a recent episode of The Player’s Box podcast. Pegula acknowledged the impact of her decision, saying:

“I had to pull out of Austin this week because tight turnaround from Dubai… Maddy must be absolutely livid… She did not get to play Austin after all.” Jessica Pegula said

Keys’ frustration extends back to last year when similar ranking constraints stopped her from competing at the ATX Open. She even requested a wild card but was denied, causing her to express her anger directly to the WTA via emails and texts. She confronted Pegula, stating:

Recent Rivalries and Performance Overview of Keys and Pegula

Earlier this year at the Australian Open, Pegula halted Keys’ progress by winning their matchup before falling to eventual champion Elena Rybakina in the semifinals. Pegula’s Dubai triumph, where she defeated Elina Svitolina to claim her third WTA 1000 title, contrasted with Keys’ ongoing title drought since her 2023 Australian Open victory.

Looking ahead, both athletes will compete at Indian Wells, a tournament neither has yet won. Keys reached her first semifinal there last year but was defeated by Aryna Sabalenka, the eventual runner-up. Pegula’s best result at Indian Wells remains a quarterfinal appearance in 2021. She also plans to participate in doubles alongside McCartney Kessler, facing the pairing of Eri Hozumi and Wu Fang-Hsien in the opening round.

Keys’ highest WTA 1000 achievement is winning the 2019 Cincinnati Open, where she defeated Svetlana Kuznetsova. To date, Pegula and Keys have faced off four times, each claiming two victories.

Keys Highlights Hailey Baptiste as a Threat at Indian Wells

During The Player’s Box podcast, Madison Keys praised fellow American Hailey Baptiste as a formidable competitor at Indian Wells. Baptiste, who is still seeking her first singles title but holds four ITF singles wins, has appeared in three WTA 1000 events this season but has struggled to reach the third round.

“I am going to throw out Hailey Baptiste. I think Hailey’s game on those courts could be very dangerous. I think she is incredibly talented, but I think she has been playing some very good tennis. So I would not be surprised if she had a very good tournament.”

Baptiste’s most notable tour-level success came in doubles, winning the 2021 Charleston Open alongside Caty McNally. In WTA 1000 competitions, her best progress is reaching the third round on four occasions, including last year’s Miami Open. At Indian Wells, she will face Emiliana Arango in the first round.

Upcoming Challenges and Prospects for Keys and Pegula

The dynamic between Keys and Pegula remains tense, fueled by Pegula’s recent successes and Keys’ struggle to secure opportunities at preferred tournaments. Both players will look to make significant progress at Indian Wells, where their performances could impact their momentum for the season.

Given Keys’ evident frustration over losing chances at Austin and Pegula’s demanding schedule, the WTA’s ranking rules and entry deadlines continue to create complex barriers for top players hoping to optimize participation. How these challenges influence their future tournament plans and rivalry will be closely watched as the season unfolds.
