Jessica Pegula secured a hard-fought victory against Donna Vekić in the second round of the BNP Paribas Open, shortly after her impressive win at the 2026 Dubai Tennis Championships. The World No. 5 American recovered from dropping the first set to claim a 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 win, crediting her opponent as a surprising source of distraction during the contest.
Despite the challenge, Pegula demonstrated resilience and strategic play to advance to the third round, continuing her campaign at Indian Wells. She acknowledged how Vekić’s presence affected her performance, bringing an unexpected element to the match.
Unexpected Distraction: Pegula Comments on Vekić’s Jewelry and Outfit
In an on-court interview after the match, Pegula praised Donna Vekić’s warm and friendly demeanor but revealed a humorous reason for her momentary lapse in focus. She explained that Vekić’s sparkling diamond necklace, visible during their exchange at the net, was dazzling enough to disrupt her concentration. Pegula also noted the striking coincidence of Vekić’s green-and-white outfit matching the color of the scoreboard, which added to the distraction.
“She’s great, though. Love Donna. She’s super nice, super friendly. She was blinding me a little bit with her diamonds. Maybe that’s why I couldn’t make a ball for a while. She’s blinged out to the max. She also matched the scoreboard with her outfit and the jewelry. It was really throwing me off,”
Pegula said.
Reflecting on a Challenging Match and Mental Toughness
During her post-match press conference, Pegula discussed the mental hurdles she faced while coming back from a set down. She admitted the fear of losing did cross her mind but credited her experience in tough three-set matches for keeping her confident and focused.

“I was thinking about, wow, this would not be great if I lose. I was like, well, maybe I can get out of the sponsor thing I have to do tomorrow. My brain is kind of going, and I think I’ve played so many matches and had some really good three-set matches lately where I also was like pretty comfortable knowing that I could turn it around,”
Jessica Pegula said.
“Yeah, I think I’m just comfortable in those situations. There’s always a little bit of panic, but at the same time, I have been dealing with those matches for a while, and maybe not as much panic as it used to be.”
Upcoming Opponent and Potential Path Forward
Looking ahead, Pegula is set to face Jelena Ostapenko in the third round after the Latvian defeated Katie Volynets 6-4, 7-6(5). Pegula currently holds a slight advantage in their head-to-head record at 3-2, although Ostapenko claimed their last encounter at the 2023 China Open with a 6-4, 6-2 win.
If Pegula prevails against Ostapenko, she will likely meet either Belinda Bencic or Elise Mertens in the fourth round. Beyond that, a showdown with Madison Keys or Elena Rybakina could await in the quarterfinals, setting up a potentially challenging route deeper into the tournament for the World No. 5.
Significance of Pegula’s Performance and What Lies Ahead
Pegula’s ability to maintain composure under pressure against a crafty opponent like Vekić highlights her growing mental resilience, a key factor as she strives to build on her recent success at the Dubai Tennis Championships. The match demonstrated how external factors, even something as unexpected as an opponent’s jewelry and outfit, can influence player focus during high-stakes contests.
Her upcoming matches at Indian Wells will be critical in assessing whether she can sustain this momentum and advance toward the later stages of the tournament, potentially enhancing her standing among the top contenders in women’s tennis.
