Early Life and Background

Aldrich Potgieter was born on 13 September 2004 in Pretoria, South Africa, to parents Adele and Heinrich Potgieter. He was raised in Mossel Bay, where his family speaks Afrikaans. Potgieter began playing golf at an early age, attending the Louis Oosthuizen Junior Golf Academy. At the age of eight, he moved to Perth, Western Australia, with his family, where he attended Kingsway Christian College and participated in their golf program. He returned to South Africa at age 17 due to the impact of Australia’s COVID-19 policies on his ability to compete in tournaments. In addition to golf, Potgieter was involved in other sports such as rugby and wrestling during his childhood. In 2020, he won the South Australian Junior Masters by nine shots, continuing his success into 2021 with a win at the Western Australian Amateur and a second-place finish at the Australian Boys’ Amateur. In 2022, he claimed victories at both the Nomads South African Juniors International and the Nomads SA Boys U19 Championship. Potgieter’s significant achievement came when he won The Amateur Championship in June 2022 at the age of 17, making him the second-youngest winner in the history of the championship.

Following his victory at The Amateur Championship, Aldrich Potgieter qualified for the 2023 Masters Tournament, where he shot rounds of 77 and 74, ultimately missing the cut. In February 2024, he shot an impressive 11-under 59 during the second round of the Astara Golf Championship, although he finished tied for 20th after rounds of 73 and 71 on the weekend. Despite a strong start, Potgieter faced challenges throughout the 2024 Korn Ferry Tour season, missing the cut in several tournaments. However, he managed to secure promotion to the PGA Tour in 2025 by finishing 29th in the Korn Ferry Tour Championship.
