Alex Noren Bio

Alexander Norén (born 12 July 1982) is a Swedish professional golfer who plays on the PGA Tour and the European Tour. He has won twelve tournaments on the European Tour, including the BMW PGA Championship, the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open, the British Masters, HNA Open de France and the Nedbank Golf Challenge. Norén was a member of the winning 2018 European Ryder Cup team and reached a career-high Official World Golf Ranking of eighth in May 2017.

Early Life and Background

Norén was born in Stockholm, Sweden, and first tried golf at four years of age before taking up the game at Haninge Golf Club. While growing up he also practiced other sports, but eventually chose to focus his attention on golf. At 14, he won the unofficial Swedish Youth Championship, the Föreningsbanken Cup, at his age level, scoring 146 over 36 holes at Rya Golf Club. The victory offered an early signal that he had the talent to compete at a high level.

At 15, Norén attended the Swedish upper secondary sports school, where he was able to combine his studies with structured golf training. During that period he also worked as a junior editor at Svensk Golf, the official magazine of the Swedish Golf Federation. He later moved to the United States to attend Oklahoma State University, where he earned All-Big 12 and All-Central Region honors and helped the Cowboys win the Jerry Pate tournament.

Path to Golf

As an amateur, Norén represented Sweden at every level. He was part of the Swedish team that won the 2002 European Youths’ Team Championship at Gdansk Golf and Country Club in Poland. Two years later he played for Sweden at the 2004 Eisenhower Trophy in Río Grande, Puerto Rico, where the team won a bronze medal and Norén tied for third individually.

His time at Oklahoma State University sharpened his competitive edge. As a freshman he recorded one top-10 finish, ended the season ranked 13th in Region V, and was named to the GCAA All-Central Region team. In his sophomore year he posted his first career top-five finish, a tie for third at the Inverness Intercollegiate, while earning Academic All-Big 12 first-team honors. His junior year featured six top-10 finishes, a first-team All-Big 12 selection, and a victory with the Cowboys at the Jerry Pate tournament.

Alex Noren Career

Early Career (2005–2008)

Norén turned professional at the end of 2005 and earned a place on Europe’s second-tier Challenge Tour by reaching the final stage of European Tour qualifying school. In his rookie season he captured his maiden professional title at the Rolex Trophy and finished third on the Challenge Tour Rankings, which earned him a promotion to the elite European Tour for 2007.

He had a solid rookie season on the European Tour in 2007 and improved on it the following year, finishing 31st on the Order of Merit. In 2008 he made the cut at The Open Championship and sat inside the top 10 going into the third round before settling for a tie for 19th.

European Tour Breakthrough (2009–2011)

Norén broke through in September 2009 at the Omega European Masters, finishing 20 under par to win by two strokes over Bradley Dredge and ending the season 25th on the Race to Dubai. In June 2011 he added the Saab Wales Open at The Celtic Manor Resort, winning by two strokes from Grégory Bourdy and Anders Hansen at 9 under par, a victory that earned him a spot in the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone Country Club.

The following month Norén won the Nordea Masters at Bro Hof Slott Golf Club in his home country, leading wire-to-wire for the first time in his career and building an eleven-stroke margin after the third round before finishing seven strokes ahead of Richard Finch. He closed 2011 ranked 14th on the Race to Dubai.

European Tour Peak (2015–2018)

Norén returned from a 2014 absence caused by tendonitis in both wrists and won the Nordea Masters for the second time in June 2015. The second half of 2016 brought his most prolific run, four victories in eleven European Tour starts. He captured the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open at Castle Stuart by a single stroke over Tyrrell Hatton, then won the Omega European Masters in a playoff against Scott Hend and added the British Masters at The Grove.

He closed 2016 with the Nedbank Golf Challenge, firing a final-round 63 to win by six strokes and collect $1,166,660, his largest payday to that point. The win lifted him to third in the Race to Dubai and to ninth in the Official World Golf Ranking, making him only the fourth Swede to enter the top ten after Henrik Stenson, Robert Karlsson and Jesper Parnevik. In May 2017 he added the BMW PGA Championship, and in July 2018 he won the HNA Open de France at Le Golf National.

PGA Tour Era (2017–Present)

Norén qualified for the PGA Tour for the 2017-18 season through non-member FedEx Cup points and quickly made his presence felt. In January 2018 he finished runner-up at the Farmers Insurance Open after losing a six-hole sudden-death playoff to Jason Day, and in March 2018 he reached the semi-finals of the WGC-Match Play before falling to Kevin Kisner in 19 holes, then beat Justin Thomas in the consolation match.

At the 2020 U.S. Open at Winged Foot Golf Club he produced his best major result to date, a third-round 67 that vaulted him into contention and a tie for 17th at 8 over par. By 2022 he was recording top finishes on both tours, including a solo second at the Barracuda Championship and a tie for second at the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai, results that kept him inside the top 50 in the world and earned him an invitation to the 2023 Masters Tournament.

Driving Style and Strengths

Norén is recognized as a steady ball striker and one of the most accurate drivers on the European and PGA Tours. He combines a calm, methodical temperament with strong iron play and a reliable short game, and his ability to hold a 54-hole lead is a hallmark of his career. Coaches and observers have pointed to his course management and work ethic as key factors behind his consistency across varied course types.

Notable Events and Milestones

His most iconic moment came at the 2018 Ryder Cup at Le Golf National, where he went 2-1-0 and holed a long birdie putt on the 18th green to beat Bryson DeChambeau in the final singles match of the event, the last shot of the competition. Earlier that same summer he had won the HNA Open de France at the same venue, and in 2016 he produced a closing 63 to win the Nedbank Golf Challenge by six strokes.
