Alex Vlasic Bio

Alex Vlasic (born June 5, 2001) is an American professional ice hockey player who is a defenseman for the Chicago Blackhawks of the National Hockey League (NHL). He was selected by the Blackhawks in the second round, 43rd overall, in the 2019 NHL entry draft.

Early Life and Background

Alex Vlasic was born on June 5, 2001, in Wilmette, Illinois, to parents Tara and John. He grew up alongside his older siblings, Emma and Eric, and is of Croatian descent, with his grandfather having immigrated to Montreal. Despite being raised in Illinois, Vlasic was a fan of the San Jose Sharks due to his cousin, Marc-Édouard Vlasic, who played for the team. He began skating at the age of three and played organized ice hockey with the Wilmette Braves at various youth levels.

His early exposure to hockey came from a family deeply involved in the sport. His sister Emma played at Yale University and with the Connecticut Whale, while his brother participated in the Chicago Blackhawks special hockey program. Initially playing as a forward, Vlasic switched to defense at the age of nine. At 13, he was diagnosed with celiac disease, which he managed while pursuing his hockey career.

Path to Hockey

Growing up in Illinois, Alex Vlasic played for the Chicago Young Americans and Chicago Mission. While with the Chicago Mission Midget U16 team, he committed to play college ice hockey for the Boston University Terriers. At the time, he was also considered a top five draft pick for the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). Instead of joining the OHL, Vlasic was recruited to play for the USA Hockey National Team Development Program (NTDP) for the 2017–18 USHL season. He credited the NTDP’s intense practices with significantly improving his game.

Vlasic praised the coaching staff at NTDP, including John Wroblewski and Greg Moore, for their guidance. He also highlighted the impact of Dan Hinote, the associate head coach, on his development and physical growth. These formative experiences laid the groundwork for his future success in hockey.
