Early Life and Background

Benjamin Casparius was born on February 11, 1999. He attended Staples High School in Westport, Connecticut, where he set the state’s all-time hits record and led his team to a state title in 2017. His outstanding performance earned him the title of Connecticut Gatorade Player of the Year. Following high school, he played college baseball at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for two years, where he initially excelled as a two-way player.
As a freshman at the University of North Carolina, Casparius had a remarkable 1.69 earned run average (ERA) in 10 pitching appearances while also contributing offensively with 18 hits and 15 runs batted in (RBI). He helped lead the Tar Heels to a berth in the College World Series. However, in his sophomore season, he faced challenges at the plate, prompting the coaching staff to shift his focus solely to pitching, where he recorded a 4.41 ERA in 12 outings.

Path to Baseball

After transferring to the University of Connecticut in 2020, Casparius faced a setback when he was denied a waiver to play immediately and had to sit out his junior season, which was ultimately canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. During this time, he played in the Futures Collegiate Baseball League for the New Britain Bees, hoping to be selected in the 2020 MLB draft. However, he was not chosen due to the draft’s shortened length and returned to the University of Connecticut for the 2021 season. In 15 starts, he posted an 8–5 record with a 4.03 ERA.
