Cole Gatlin Ragans (born December 12, 1997) is an American professional baseball pitcher for the Kansas City Royals of Major League Baseball (MLB). He has previously played in MLB for the Texas Rangers. Ragans has made a name for himself in the league with notable performances, including being selected for the All-Star Game in 2024 and earning the Texas Rangers 2022 Nolan Ryan Pitcher of the Year award.

Early Life and Background

Cole Ragans was born in Tallahassee, Florida, where he attended North Florida Christian High School. During his senior season, he showcased his talent by achieving a remarkable 9–0 record with a 0.90 earned run average (ERA) and striking out 104 batters over 70 innings. His impressive high school performance led him to commit to play college baseball for the Florida State Seminoles.

Path to Baseball

Ragans was drafted by the Texas Rangers with the 30th overall selection in the first round of the 2016 Major League Baseball draft. He signed with the Rangers for a signing bonus of $2,003,400. After signing, he began his professional career with the AZL Rangers in the Rookie-level Arizona League, where he posted a 4.70 ERA in 7+2⁄3 innings. His journey included stints with various minor league teams, where he continued to develop his skills despite facing challenges, including injuries that required Tommy John surgery.

Early Career (2022)

Ragans made his MLB debut on August 4, 2022, after being promoted to the Texas Rangers’ active roster. In his debut against the Chicago White Sox, he allowed one unearned run over five innings while recording three strikeouts. Over his first season, he made nine appearances for the Rangers, finishing with a 0–3 record and a 4.96 ERA.

Breakthrough (2023-2024)

On June 30, 2023, Ragans was traded to the Kansas City Royals, where he transitioned from a bullpen role to a starting pitcher. His performance improved significantly, and he received the American League Pitcher of the Month Award for August 2023. In 2024, Ragans achieved a 3.28 ERA over 19 starts and was selected for his first All-Star Game.

Notable Works and Milestones

Ragans became the fifth pitcher in Royals history to strike out 200 batters in a single season during a game against the Minnesota Twins on September 6, 2024. His career continues to progress as he signs a three-year contract with the Royals, which will cover his final pre-arbitration year and his first two arbitration years.
