His early exposure to sports and athletics was influenced by his family’s athletic background, which includes his mother, Donna Smellie, a former Olympian.

Path to Baseball

Clarke was selected by the New York Mets in the 36th round of the 2018 MLB draft but opted not to sign with the team. Instead, he pursued a collegiate career at Cal State Northridge, where he played baseball for three seasons from 2019 to 2021. During his college career, he also played summer league baseball with the Kokomo Jackrabbits in the Northwoods League in 2019.

After completing his college career, Denzel Clarke was drafted 127th overall by the Oakland Athletics in the fourth round of the 2021 MLB draft. He signed with the team and made his professional debut with the ACL Athletics. Clarke started the 2022 season with the Single-A Stockton Ports before being promoted to the High-A Lansing Lugnuts. He had a successful 2022 season, batting a combined .248 with 15 home runs and 47 RBIs in 93 games.

Clarke made his Major League Baseball debut on May 23, 2025, after being optioned to the Triple-A Las Vegas Aviators to begin the season.
