Donovan Sebrango Bio
Donovan Sebrango (born January 12, 2002) is a Canadian professional ice hockey player who is a defenceman for the Florida Panthers of the National Hockey League (NHL). Sebrango was selected in the 2020 NHL entry draft by the Detroit Red Wings. He was traded to the Ottawa Senators in 2023 before ever playing for the Red Wings. He made his NHL debut with the Senators in the 2024–25 season and made appearances for them in the 2025–26 season before being claimed on waivers by the Panthers in 2025.
Early Life and Background
Donovan Sebrango was born in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. He grew up in a family that valued sports, with his father, Eduardo, being a retired professional Cuban footballer who emigrated to Canada in 1999. Sebrango’s parents divorced when he was a toddler, and he was raised by his mother, Kim, in Kingston, Ontario. This environment fostered his early interest in sports, particularly hockey. Sebrango’s commitment to the sport was evident from a young age, as he began playing minor hockey and quickly developed his skills on the ice.
Path to Hockey
While playing minor hockey, Donovan Sebrango committed to playing for Boston University in the National Collegiate Athletic Association when he turned 18. However, he was heavily scouted by teams from the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) and chose to pursue that path instead. He was selected by the Kitchener Rangers in the second round, 40th overall, in the 2018 OHL Priority Selection. Sebrango played his OHL rookie season in 2018–19 and quickly established himself in the Rangers’ defense corps. His second season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but he recorded impressive statistics during his time with Kitchener.

Early Career (2021–2023)
Donovan Sebrango was selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the third round, 63rd overall, of the 2020 NHL Entry Draft. The 2020–21 season was delayed due to the pandemic, leading him to sign with HK Levice of the Slovak 2. Liga, where he played five games, scoring one goal and three points. He then returned to North America to play for the Grand Rapids Griffins, the Red Wings’ American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, on an amateur tryout contract. Sebrango made his North American professional debut with the Griffins on February 11, 2021, and signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Red Wings on March 15, 2021.
Breakthrough (2024–2025)
Sebrango’s significant breakthrough came during the 2024–25 NHL season when he made his debut with the Ottawa Senators. He was recalled from the Belleville Senators, where he had been assigned for the season, and made his first NHL appearance on January 16, 2025, against the Washington Capitals. He played in a few games for the Senators before being returned to Belleville, where he finished the season with eight goals and 20 points in 50 games.
Notable Works and Milestones
In the 2025–26 season, Sebrango opened the season with the Ottawa Senators but was placed on waivers and subsequently claimed by the Florida Panthers. He made his Panthers debut on November 1, 2025, and registered his first two points with the team shortly after.
