The Florida Panthers are aiming to climb back into the playoff picture following the Olympic break, currently trailing the final Wild Card spot by eight points. Panthers head coach Paul Maurice suggested that defenseman Dmitry Kulikov could return to the lineup for Sunday’s game against the New York Islanders, marking an important update on Kulikov’s injury status.
Defensive Veteran Has Missed Significant Time Due to Upper-Body Injury
Dmitry Kulikov has been sidelined since October 9 after suffering an upper-body injury in the second game of the season during a 2-1 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers. According to NHL.com, Maurice described Kulikov as a game-day decision for the matchup against the Islanders.
Kulikov’s Return Would Bolster Panthers’ Defense Corps
Kulikov began his professional career with the Panthers, spending seven seasons in Florida before stints with other teams. He rejoined the Panthers before the 2023-24 season, which saw the team capture their first of two consecutive Stanley Cup titles. His absence since early October has left a noticeable gap among the team’s defensive ranks.
Season Marked by Injuries to Key Players
The Panthers have also been impacted by injuries to several prominent figures. Aleksander Barkov has yet to play this season due to a knee injury suffered in training camp, while Matthew Tkachuk missed the first 47 games after offseason surgery. Kulikov’s injury, combined with the recent absence of Seth Jones, weakened a once formidable defensive lineup.
Team Struggles Amid Defensive and Offensive Setbacks
The Panthers’ recent championship runs were built on strong defense and goaltending, featuring standout performances from players like Gustav Forsling, Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Aaron Ekblad, and Seth Jones. This season, the team has relied heavily on Jeff Petry and Donovan Sebrango to fill gaps, but their efforts have not fully compensated. Additionally, missing top forwards for most of the season has contributed to a difficult campaign in South Florida.
Upcoming Game Against Islanders Could Kickstart Playoff Push
Despite the challenges, the Panthers remain in the playoff race with time to improve. Securing a win over the Islanders, who enter Sunday with a four-game winning streak, would be a crucial step toward reviving their postseason hopes.
“Dmitry Kulikov is a game-day decision at the New York Islanders on Sunday, Panthers coach Paul Maurice said. The defenseman hasn’t played since Oct. 9 because of an upper-body injury sustained in the second game of the season, a 2-1 win against the Philadelphia Flyers,”
