Gavin Williams was born in Fayetteville, North Carolina. He attended Cape Fear High School, where he began to develop his skills as a pitcher. Williams concluded his high school career with a remarkable 6–1 win-loss record and a 0.35 earned run average (ERA) over 39 innings pitched. Gavin Williams was selected in the first round, with the 23rd overall pick, of the 2021 Major League Baseball draft by the Cleveland Indians. He signed with the team for a $2.25 million signing bonus. Williams began his professional career with the Lake County Captains in the High-A Midwest League, where he made a strong impression with a 2–1 record and a 1.40 ERA over nine starts. His performance earned him a promotion to the Akron RubberDucks in the Double-A Eastern League, where he continued to excel, posting a 3–3 record with a 2.31 ERA over 16 starts.

Breakthrough (2023)

Williams began the 2023 season with the Akron RubberDucks but was quickly promoted to the Columbus Clippers in the Triple-A International League after three starts. He logged a 3–2 record and a 2.93 ERA with 61 strikeouts across nine starts for Columbus. On June 20, 2023, the Cleveland Guardians announced that Williams would be promoted to the major leagues for the first time, making his debut the following day against the Oakland Athletics. In his rookie season, he recorded a 3–5 record and a 3.29 ERA with 81 strikeouts across 82 innings pitched.
