Tanner Bibee experienced a rollercoaster 2025 season after securing a five-year, $48 million contract extension last spring. The 26-year-old pitcher faced difficulties in the first half, posting a 4.29 ERA and recording seven starts in which he allowed four or more runs. However, Bibee dramatically improved in the latter part of the year, delivering a remarkable 1.30 ERA across four starts in September as he regained his form and confidence on the mound.
Spring Debut Shows Bibee’s Poise as He Prepares for Leadership Role
In his 2026 spring debut, Bibee pitched two scoreless innings with one strikeout, helping the Guardians defeat the Diamondbacks. Speaking with reporters after the game, Bibee reflected on the pressure he placed on himself following his contract signing.
“I did sign a contract … maybe I put the pressure on myself to want to pitch better than I already was instead of just being who I was,”
Bibee said, per Cleveland.com’s Paul Hoynes.
“So, I feel like I could have been doing that pretty early (in the season), for sure.”
Describing his last season as a “super up-and-down season,” Bibee acknowledged that his struggles early in the year impacted several facets of his game. His strikeout rate dropped, walk rate increased, and at one point, he was surrendering 2.45 home runs per nine innings, which hindered his overall effectiveness.
Second-Half Recovery and Role in Guardians’ Historic Comeback
Bibee managed to reclaim his confidence and adjust his approach by attacking the strike zone more aggressively rather than nibbling on corners and falling behind in counts. This turnaround coincided with the Guardians’ remarkable rally to clinch the American League Central title, a resurgence that buoyed the entire pitching staff.

Though limited to four starts in the second half due to the team’s six-man rotation strategy, Bibee was dominant, including a complete-game shutout against the White Sox. The Guardians’ rotation collectively posted an American League-best 2.60 ERA in September, underscoring the team’s pitching strength during that stretch.
Bibee’s Performance in Postseason and Expectations for 2026
In his sole postseason appearance, Bibee pitched 4⅔ innings against the Detroit Tigers, contributing to Cleveland’s only playoff victory that fall. With the Guardians returning to a five-man rotation for the upcoming season, Bibee is expected to secure more regular starts, forming a formidable one-two pitching duo alongside Gavin Williams in the American League.
Despite missing the chance to be the Opening Day starter last year due to acute gastroenteritis, Bibee is projected to start Cleveland’s 2026 season opener against the Seattle Mariners on March 26, assuming his preparations continue smoothly.
Anticipated Impact on Guardians’ 2026 Rotation and Team Outlook
Bibee entering the new season as a reliable ace is crucial for the Guardians, who aim to build on their previous success and maintain strong pitching consistency. His improved command and resilience after a turbulent 2025 position him well to lead the rotation, while the presence of Gavin Williams bolsters Cleveland’s pitching depth. The team and fans alike will be watching to see if Bibee can sustain his late-season form and thrive under the increased expectations of being a frontline starter.
