Tanner Hayes Bibee is an American professional baseball pitcher for the Cleveland Guardians of Major League Baseball (MLB). He made his MLB debut in 2023 and has shown impressive performance since then, including a strong collegiate career at California State University, Fullerton and being drafted by the Guardians in 2021.

Early Life and Background

Tanner Hayes Bibee was born on March 5, 1999. He attended Mission Viejo High School in Mission Viejo, California, where he began to develop his skills as a baseball player. Following high school, he furthered his education and baseball career at California State University, Fullerton, where he played for the Cal State Fullerton Titans. During his time in college, Bibee also participated in collegiate summer baseball with the Wareham Gatemen in the Cape Cod Baseball League in 2019.

Path to Baseball

Tanner Bibee was eligible for the 2020 Major League Baseball Draft but went undrafted, which led him to return to California State University, Fullerton for his senior year. His persistence paid off when the Cleveland Guardians selected him in the fifth round with the 156th overall selection of the 2021 MLB Draft. Bibee made his professional debut in 2022 with the High-A Lake County Captains, where he showcased his talent and potential.

Early Career (2022-2023)

Tanner Bibee began his professional career with the Lake County Captains in 2022, splitting the year between Lake County and the Double-A Akron RubberDucks. He achieved a combined record of 8–2 with an impressive 2.17 earned run average (ERA) and 167 strikeouts in 132 and two-thirds innings pitched across 25 starts. His strong performance earned him a promotion to the Triple-A Columbus Clippers at the beginning of the 2023 season, where he continued to excel.

Breakthrough (2023)

On April 26, 2023, Tanner Bibee was promoted to the major leagues for the first time. He made his major league debut that day, starting against the Colorado Rockies. In his debut, Bibee made history by becoming the first Cleveland pitcher since at least 1920 to record at least five consecutive strikeouts in a major league debut. He ended the game with a final line of 5 and two-thirds innings pitched, achieving 8 strikeouts and allowing just 1 earned run, which resulted in his first career win. Over the course of the 2023 season, Bibee made 25 starts for the Guardians, posting a 10–4 record and a 2.98 ERA with 141 strikeouts in 142 innings pitched.
