Cleveland Guardians Spring Training: Hot Starts and Early Worries

The Cleveland Guardians have spent the first week of spring training in Goodyear, Arizona preparing for the 2026 season, but an early issue has emerged regarding Chase DeLauter. The former 2022 first-round draft pick experienced soreness after just six at-bats in two games, causing him to miss subsequent games. Fortunately, DeLauter has returned to the lineup as the designated hitter batting second and will likely receive a mix of starts and rest days to help him regain full strength. Still, facing an injury concern so early in spring training raises some early caution.

Players Making Strong Impressions Early On

Several Guardians players are off to impressive starts this spring. George Valera is batting an outstanding .417 with an on-base percentage of .462 and a slugging percentage of 1.212 through 12 at-bats. He has hit one home run and one double and is primarily fielding in right field, suggesting the team plans for him to be a regular part of the outfield come Opening Day.

Bo Naylor is another standout performer who appears guaranteed a spot on the Opening Day roster. In 10 at-bats, Naylor has recorded five hits, including three doubles, drawn two walks, and struck out twice. Additionally, prospects Ralphy Velazquez and Kahlil Watson are turning heads with their offensive contributions. Velazquez’s power bat and first base skills indicate a potential call-up this summer, while Watson is gaining recognition through a hot start as well. Meanwhile, Jaison Chourio and Petey Halpin have both hit .375 in eight at-bats each, earning themselves more playing opportunities at spring training.

On the pitching side, it is too soon to draw definitive conclusions, as pitchers generally need more innings to establish form and consistency during spring training.

Areas That Require Close Watching but No Immediate Alarm

Some players have begun spring training on a slower note offensively, including Kyle Manzardo, Nolan Jones, and Johnathan Rodriguez. Manzardo’s slow start is not a major concern, but Jones and Rodriguez will need to elevate their performances throughout March, as their opportunities may be limited. The middle infield trio of Juan Brito, Angel Genao, and Gabriel Arias has also been sluggish offensively, missing chances to stand out during spring training’s early phase.

Pitcher Tanner Bibee’s recent outings have evoked some worries, resembling his uneven 2025 form more than his previous seasons. However, given that pitchers often require time to build up arm strength after the offseason, it is important to remain patient before making judgments.

Overall, the Guardians’ camp in Goodyear shows a blend of promising performances and early challenges as March progresses toward Opening Day.
