Early Life and Background

Gunnar Hoglund was born in Hudson, Florida. He graduated from Dayspring Academy in Port Richey, Florida, where he did not have access to athletic teams. Consequently, he played baseball at Fivay High School in Hudson, Florida. During his senior year in 2018, he achieved an impressive 7–0 win-loss record with a remarkable earned run average (ERA) of 0.27, showcasing his potential as a talented pitcher.

Path to Baseball

After high school, Hoglund was selected 36th overall by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 2018 Major League Baseball draft, but he opted not to sign. Instead, he chose to enroll at the University of Mississippi, where he played for the Ole Miss Rebels. In his freshman year in 2019, he appeared in 17 games, starting 16 of them, and recorded a 3–3 record with a 5.29 ERA, striking out 53 batters in 68 innings pitched. His sophomore season in 2020 was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but he posted an impressive 3–0 record with a 1.16 ERA before the season ended.

Early Career (2019–2021)

In 2021, Hoglund’s junior season was marred by injury as he required Tommy John surgery, which ended his season prematurely. Before the surgery, he had pitched 62+2⁄3 innings, striking out 96 batters and achieving a 4–2 record with a 2.87 ERA. Following his recovery, Hoglund was selected in the first round, 19th overall, by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 2021 Major League Baseball draft. He signed with the Blue Jays for a $3.2 million signing bonus, forgoing his senior year of college baseball.

Breakthrough (2022–2025)

On March 16, 2022, Hoglund was traded to the Oakland Athletics along with three other players in exchange for Matt Chapman. He made his professional debut in mid-July 2022 during a rehab start with the rookie-level Arizona Complex League Athletics. He then moved to the Single-A Stockton Ports, where he pitched a total of eight innings without giving up any earned runs. Hoglund continued to progress through the minor leagues, splitting the 2024 season between Midland and the Triple-A Las Vegas Aviators, where he compiled a 9–7 record and a 3.44 ERA with 119 strikeouts across 130+2⁄3 innings pitched. He was added to the Athletics’ 40-man roster on November 19, 2024, to protect him from the Rule 5 draft.

Notable Works and Milestones

Hoglund began the 2025 season optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas, where he recorded a 1–2 record and a 2.43 ERA. He was promoted to the major leagues on May 2, 2025, making his debut against the Miami Marlins, where he earned his first career win after pitching six innings, allowing six hits and one run. In six starts during his rookie season, he logged a 1-3 record with a 6.40 ERA and 23 strikeouts across 32+1⁄3 innings pitched. Unfortunately, he was placed on the injured list due to a left hip impingement and later underwent hip surgery, which sidelined him for the remainder of the season.
