Indiana Denchev Vassilev is an American professional soccer player who plays as a midfielder for the Philadelphia Union of Major League Soccer and the United States national team. Vassilev is a product of Aston Villa, having signed from the IMG Academy in Florida. He has represented the United States internationally at various youth levels and made his senior debut in January 2025.
Early Life and Background
Indiana Vassilev was born on February 16, 2001, in Savannah, Georgia, United States. He began his soccer journey at a young age, starting with Savannah United, where he played from 2005 to 2012. Following his time there, he joined the South Georgia Tormenta FC Academy from 2013 to 2015 before moving to the IMG Academy in Florida. His coach at IMG Academy, Kevin Hartman, recognized Vassilev’s leadership qualities and potential to play at a high level, which set the foundation for his future career.
Path to Soccer
Vassilev’s talent was first noticed by Aston Villa in November 2016, and he was scouted again while representing the United States at the 2017 U17 World Cup. He signed a professional contract with Aston Villa in 2018 and began playing for their U23 team in the Premier League 2. His impressive performance, including scoring four goals in his first six games of the 2019–20 season, earned him a spot on Aston Villa’s first team in January 2020.

Vassilev made his professional debut for Aston Villa on January 4, 2020, in an FA Cup match against Fulham. In September 2020, he signed for Burton Albion on a season-long loan, where he made his debut shortly after. He later joined Cheltenham Town on loan, contributing to their League Two title win in May 2021, marking his first trophy.

Vassilev joined Inter Miami on loan in July 2021, where he made his MLS debut and scored his first goal in August 2021. He returned to Inter Miami for a second season in May 2022, continuing to develop his skills and gain valuable experience. In November 2022, Vassilev’s MLS rights were acquired by St. Louis City SC, and he made his debut for the team in February 2023, contributing to their inaugural competitive match. He had a successful season, starting 23 of 29 games and scoring two goals.
