Philadelphia Union Overview
The Philadelphia Union are an American professional soccer club based in the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The club competes in Major League Soccer (MLS) as a member of the Eastern Conference and plays home matches at Subaru Park, a soccer-specific stadium in Chester, Pennsylvania, on the banks of the Delaware River. Founded on February 28, 2008, the Union began MLS play in 2010 as the league’s sixteenth expansion team.
The club is owned by Keystone Sports & Entertainment, with Jay Sugarman serving as majority owner and chairman. Professional basketball player Kevin Durant is a minority investor. The Union compete in navy blue, gold, and light blue, colors chosen to honor the uniforms of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. The team has earned the Supporters’ Shield in 2020 and 2025 and reached the 2022 MLS Cup final.
Founding and Organizational Origins
Philadelphia had been one of the largest metropolitan areas in the United States without an MLS franchise when the league launched in 1996. Earlier professional soccer in the city had been represented by the Philadelphia Atoms, who won the 1973 Soccer Bowl, and the Philadelphia Fury, both of which played in the North American Soccer League before it folded in 1984. On April 11, 2025, the club’s all-time top scorer Dániel Gazdag transferred to the Columbus Crew.
