Joe Walters was born on November 30, 1984, in Irondequoit, New York, to Joe and Be Walters. He is the youngest of four children. His father, Joe, served with the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, where he met his mother, Be. Walters attended Irondequoit High School, where he first developed his passion for lacrosse.

Path to Lacrosse

Walters’ lacrosse journey continued at the University of Maryland, where he excelled as a four-time All-American. He won the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Rookie of the Year Award in 2003 and was named the ACC Player of the Year in 2004. In his senior year, he became the University of Maryland’s all-time leading point scorer with 227 points and all-time leading goal scorer with 153 goals. He also won the Jack Turnbull Award as the Attackman of the Year in 2006 and was a finalist for the Tewaaraton Trophy, awarded to the National Player of the Year.
