Mario Joseph Loperfido is an American professional baseball outfielder for the Toronto Blue Jays of Major League Baseball (MLB). He made his MLB debut in 2024 with the Houston Astros. Loperfido attended Haddonfield Memorial High School in Haddonfield, New Jersey, and played college baseball at Duke University. He was selected by the Houston Astros in the seventh round of the 2021 MLB draft and has played at various levels in the Astros’ minor league system before being traded to the Blue Jays.

Early Life and Background

Mario Joseph Loperfido was born on May 11, 1999. He grew up in Haddonfield, New Jersey, where he attended Haddonfield Memorial High School. Loperfido showed an early interest in baseball, participating in various local leagues and school teams. His talent on the field earned him a spot on the high school team, where he developed his skills further. After high school, he continued his baseball journey at Duke University, where he played collegiate baseball and honed his abilities as an outfielder.

Path to Baseball

Loperfido’s baseball career began to take shape during his time at Duke University. He played collegiate summer baseball with the Kalamazoo Growlers of the Northwoods League in 2018 and with the Cotuit Kettleers of the Cape Cod Baseball League in 2019. These experiences provided him with valuable exposure to competitive play and helped him refine his skills. In 2021, he was drafted by the Houston Astros in the seventh round of the MLB draft, marking the beginning of his professional career.

Early Career (2021-2023)

Loperfido made his professional debut in 2021 with the Single–A Fayetteville Woodpeckers. He spent the 2022 season with Fayetteville and the High–A Asheville Tourists, where he continued to develop as a player. In 2023, he started the season with Asheville before being promoted to the Double–A Corpus Christi Hooks after just eight games. His performance in the minor leagues demonstrated his potential as a promising player.

Breakthrough (2024)

Loperfido’s breakthrough came in 2024 when he was selected to the 40-man roster of the Houston Astros and made his Major League debut on April 30, 2024. In his debut game, he made an immediate impact by hitting a two-RBI single against the Cleveland Guardians. He recorded his first career home run on May 16, 2024, against the Oakland Athletics. Over the course of the season, he played in 38 games for the Astros, finishing with a batting average of .236 and two home runs.

Loperfido’s transition to the Toronto Blue Jays occurred on July 29, 2024, when he was traded along with two other players in exchange for pitcher Yusei Kikuchi.
