After three successful seasons in high school hockey, Joseph LaBate was drafted by the Vancouver Canucks in the fourth round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. He was assigned to their AHL affiliate, the Utica Comets, where he made an immediate impact by scoring his first professional goal against the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. LaBate participated in the Canucks’ preseason games during the 2016-17 season, where he scored a goal but was ultimately sent back to the Comets. On November 21, 2016, he was recalled to the NHL for the first time and made his debut two days later against the Arizona Coyotes, logging 5:55 minutes of ice time. Over the course of the 2016-17 season, he played a total of 13 games with the Canucks.

Breakthrough (2018–2021)

Following the 2017-18 season, LaBate became a free agent after not receiving a qualifying offer from the Canucks. He signed a one-year AHL contract with the Belleville Senators, where he continued to develop his skills. After three seasons with the Senators, he signed with the Milwaukee Admirals for the 2021-22 season.
