Kristen Hamilton Bio
Kristen Marie Hamilton (born April 17, 1992) is an American former professional soccer player who spent her entire career as a forward in top-flight women’s leagues in the United States and abroad. She played college soccer for the Denver Pioneers in her home state of Colorado, where she set multiple program records. Selected with the last pick of the 2014 NWSL College Draft by the Western New York Flash, she went on to win league titles with three different organizations.
During her time with the Flash and its successor club, the North Carolina Courage, Hamilton was part of teams that lifted three NWSL Championships and three NWSL Shields. She later played for the Western Sydney Wanderers in Australia, where she earned the Julie Dolan Medal as the W-League’s best player. After a 2021 trade to the Kansas City Current, she spent the final five seasons of her career in Kansas City, helping the club set new league records before retiring at the end of the 2025 season.
Early Life and Background
Kristen Marie Hamilton grew up in Littleton, Colorado, where she first developed her love for the sport through club soccer with the Colorado Storm. Her early years in the area gave her a strong foundation in the game and connected her to a community that has long supported women’s soccer in the region.
She attended Columbine High School from 2006 to 2010, joining the varsity soccer team as a freshman. By her sophomore year, her play had earned her a commitment to the University of Denver, where she would go on to rewrite the school’s record book. Her development at Columbine and within the Colorado Storm established her as one of the most promising forwards in the state.
Path to Soccer
Hamilton enrolled at the University of Denver from 2010 to 2013, suiting up for the Denver Pioneers in NCAA Division I competition. She became the school’s all-time leader in points (138), goals (51), and game-winning goals (18), while finishing her career with 36 assists. She also became the first NCAA Division I player to be named Player of the Year in three different conferences: the Sun Belt Conference, the Summit League, and the Western Athletic Conference.
Her college résumé earned her national attention. Hamilton was named an NSCAA First Team All-American in 2013, was a MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist, and was a Senior CLASS Award Finalist. She balanced her athletic success with academic honors, including Capital One Academic All-American and NSCAA Scholar All-American recognition. After her senior season, she declared for the 2014 NWSL College Draft.
Kristen Hamilton Career
Early Career (2012–2014)
Before turning fully professional, Hamilton played for the Colorado Rapids Women of the USL W-League during the 2012 and 2013 seasons. In 2012, she scored six goals in 10 matches and helped the Rapids Women finish fourth in the Western Conference. Her performances in the W-League gave her experience against established professional players and prepared her for the jump to the NWSL.
She also continued her development at the University of Denver, where she set the records that would define her draft stock. The Western New York Flash selected her as the 36th overall pick in the 2014 NWSL College Draft, making her the first Denver graduate ever chosen in an NWSL draft. An ACL injury in preseason kept her off the field for the entire 2014 campaign.
Western New York Flash Breakthrough (2014–2016)
Hamilton recovered from her knee injury in time to contribute to the Flash’s 2016 season. She entered the 2016 NWSL Championship as a substitute in extra time and was on the field when the Flash claimed the title. Her first full professional campaigns came alongside veterans who helped her grow into her role as a starting forward at the top level.
The Flash won the 2016 NWSL Championship that season, and Hamilton’s development as a contributor off the bench signaled her emergence as a player to watch. After the season, the club was sold and relocated to North Carolina, beginning a new chapter of her career.
North Carolina Courage Era (2017–2021)
Following the move to North Carolina, Hamilton became a regular contributor for the Courage. In 2017, she scored four goals in 16 regular-season matches and started the NWSL Championship match before being substituted out due to injury. The next year, she helped the club win both the 2018 NWSL Shield and the 2018 NWSL Championship, scoring three goals during the regular season.
Her 2019 campaign was the breakout of her career. She scored nine goals in 22 regular-season games, including her first NWSL hat-trick against Orlando Pride and a four-goal match against Houston Dash that tied the league single-game record. She was named to the NWSL Team of the Month in both June and July, and was nominated for the league MVP award alongside teammates Debinha and Jaelene Daniels. She capped the year by playing a role in the 2019 NWSL Championship victory over Chicago.
During the 2019–20 NWSL off-season, the Courage loaned her to the Western Sydney Wanderers of the Australian W-League. She scored seven goals to share the W-League Golden Boot and became the first Wanderers player to win the Julie Dolan Medal as the league’s top player.
Kansas City Current Era (2021–2025)
On July 22, 2021, the Courage traded Hamilton, defender Hailie Mace, and goalkeeper Katelyn Rowland to Kansas City NWSL in exchange for Amy Rodriguez. The mid-season move surprised Hamilton, who described the process as being blindsided. She debuted for Kansas City on July 23, 2021, and later signed a three-year contract extension with the newly rebranded Kansas City Current.
In 2022, she played 32 matches across all competitions and scored 12 goals, setting a Current record for most goals scored across official NWSL competitions in a single season. She led the 2023 NWSL Challenge Cup in scoring with five goals, was named Challenge Cup MVP, and scored the first hat-trick in both Kansas City Current and NWSL Challenge Cup history against the Houston Dash.
In 2024, she came off the bench to score in the inaugural match at CPKC Stadium, a 5–4 win over the Portland Thorns. On January 27, 2025, the Current announced a one-year contract extension. She was part of the Current’s historic 2025 campaign, which set league single-season records for most wins (21), points (65), and shutouts (16), and won the NWSL Shield. In October 2025, Hamilton announced that she would retire from professional soccer at the conclusion of the season.
