Kyle Henry Teel is an American professional baseball catcher for the Chicago White Sox of Major League Baseball (MLB). He played college baseball for the Virginia Cavaliers and was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the first round of the 2023 MLB draft. Teel was traded to the White Sox in 2024 and made his MLB debut in 2025.
Early Life and Background
Kyle Teel was born on February 15, 2002, in Ridgewood, New Jersey, and grew up in Mahwah, New Jersey. He attended Mahwah High School, where he was a standout athlete. On the baseball team, Teel primarily played shortstop, but also took on roles as an outfielder, pitcher, and catcher. During his junior year, he achieved an impressive .574 batting average in 61 at-bats, hitting eight home runs and driving in 31 runs. His exceptional performance earned him the title of New Jersey Gatorade Player of the Year during his senior year. In addition to baseball, Teel was also the starting quarterback for the Mahwah football team. After graduating from high school, Teel played summer collegiate baseball for the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters of the Northwoods League, where he posted a .258 batting average with a .348 on-base percentage and a .392 slugging percentage in 97 at-bats. He was considered a top high school catching prospect in the 2020 MLB draft but opted out of the draft to pursue his college career.
Path to Baseball
Teel continued his baseball journey at the University of Virginia, where he played as a designated hitter, right fielder, and catcher during his freshman year. He made a significant impact, earning third-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) honors as a designated hitter after slashing .335/.416/.526 with 70 hits, nine home runs, and 41 RBIs in 209 at-bats. In his sophomore season, he played primarily as a catcher, maintaining a solid performance with a .276 batting average, 12 doubles, six home runs, and 45 RBIs in 221 at-bats. After this season, Teel participated in collegiate summer baseball with the Harwich Mariners of the Cape Cod Baseball League and was selected to play for the United States collegiate national team. The Boston Red Sox selected Kyle Teel in the first round of the 2023 Major League Baseball draft, with the 14th overall pick. He signed with the Red Sox on July 21, 2023, reportedly for a $4 million signing bonus. Teel made his professional debut on August 3, 2023, in the Florida Complex League with the FCL Red Sox and was quickly promoted to the High-A Greenville Drive on August 9. He began the 2024 season with the Double-A Portland Sea Dogs, where he was ranked as the Red Sox’ number three minor-league prospect by Baseball America. In August 2024, he was promoted to the Triple-A Worcester Red Sox, showcasing his talent with a .298 batting average and strong offensive performance.
Breakthrough (2025)
On December 11, 2024, Kyle Teel was traded to the Chicago White Sox along with several other prospects in exchange for Garrett Crochet. In 2025, Teel made headlines with a viral video of him hitting a home run off Roki Sasaki during a practice game. He had a successful stint with the Triple-A Charlotte Knights, batting .295 with eight home runs, 30 RBIs, and seven stolen bases in 50 appearances.
