Standing at 6 ft 5 in and competing at 319 lb, he developed into a reliable trench presence after starring at Tennessee State, a historically Black college and university. He entered the National Football League in 2020 when the Chicago Bears selected him in the seventh round, making him the only player drafted that year from a historically Black college or university. Early Life and Background

Lachavious Simmons was born and raised in Selma, Alabama, a city with deep roots in American history and a long tradition of producing dedicated athletes. Growing up in this community helped shape his work ethic, physical toughness, and love for football, as the sport is a major part of the local culture across the state. He attended Selma High School, where his size and athleticism began to attract attention from college recruiters.

Coming out of high school, Simmons chose to continue his football career at Tennessee State University, a historically Black college and university located in Nashville. He joined the program in 2015, taking the time to develop his body, technique, and understanding of the offensive line. Education at Tennessee State provided him with a strong platform to grow as both a student and an athlete, while competing in the Ohio Valley Conference.

Path to American Football

At Tennessee State, Lachavious Simmons steadily progressed from a developmental prospect into a dependable starter on the offensive line. As a junior in 2018, he started six games at left guard, showing the kind of consistency that coaches look for in the trenches. During that season, he demonstrated the footwork and strength that would later make him an NFL-caliber prospect.

In 2019, his senior year, Simmons elevated his game by starting 12 games at both left guard and left tackle, helping lead an offense that averaged more than 400 yards per game. His performance earned him first-team All-Ohio Valley Conference honors, and he further boosted his draft stock by participating in prestigious all-star showcases such as the College Gridiron Showcase and the Hula Bowl. These experiences gave him valuable exposure to NFL scouts and set the stage for his professional career.
