Maya Yoshida Bio
Maya Yoshida (吉田 麻也, Yoshida Maya), born on 24 August 1988, is a Japanese professional footballer who captains and plays as a centre-back for Major League Soccer club LA Galaxy. Standing 1.89 m (6 ft 2 in) tall, Yoshida formerly played for the Japan national team, making over 120 appearances across more than a decade of senior service. He is widely regarded as one of the most experienced Japanese defenders of his generation, having represented his country at three FIFA World Cups and three AFC Asian Cups.
Early Life and Background
Maya Yoshida was born in Nagasaki, Japan, on 24 August 1988. He began playing football at Nanling FC during his second year at elementary school. His older brother, Honami, played an important role in starting his football career by searching the internet for Nagoya Grampus’s U-15 team, which led Yoshida to join the program. Once he joined the academy, he relocated to Nagoya to train with the club and attended Toyota High School.
Yoshida spent five years developing inside the Nagoya Grampus Youth Academy before being promoted to the senior squad. Before he was born, his name “Maya” had originally been planned for a girl when his mother was pregnant, but the family kept the name after he was born. His family also runs a boarding house in Nagasaki for children who cannot attend high school, an experience that helped shape his sense of community responsibility.
Path to Professional Soccer
After progressing steadily through the Nagoya Grampus Youth Academy, Yoshida signed his first professional contract and was promoted to the first team for the 2007 season. He initially featured as a defensive midfielder before being converted into a centre-back, a position that would define his career. In December 2009, he transferred to Dutch club VVV-Venlo on a three-year contract, having been introduced to the agent Tetsuro Kiyooka by former Nagoya teammate Keisuke Honda, who had also played for the Dutch club.
Maya Yoshida Career
Early Career (2007–2010)
Yoshida made his professional debut for Nagoya Grampus on 3 May 2007, coming on as a second-half substitute in a 2–1 loss to Oita Trinita. He became a regular in central defense and scored his first senior goal on 5 November 2007 in a 3–1 Emperor’s Cup win over Thespa Kusatsu. In 2008, he formed a centre-back partnership with Miloš Bajalica, helped Nagoya finish third in the J-League, and won the Rookie of the Year at the 14th Aichi Toyota “Grand Pass Rankle Award.” In 2009, he scored the club’s historic first AFC Champions League goal against Ulsan Hyundai Horang-i and helped Nagoya reach the Emperor’s Cup final, where they lost 4–1 to Gamba Osaka.
VVV-Venlo Breakthrough (2010–2012)
Yoshida’s start at VVV-Venlo was disrupted by a fractured foot that kept him out for the remainder of the 2009–10 season. He made his debut on 30 October 2010 and quickly became a first-team regular, helping the club retain its Eredivisie status through the relegation play-offs. In the 2011–12 season, he scored a memorable bicycle-kick goal against PSV Eindhoven that was awarded the Eredivisie Goal of the Season, and he finished the campaign with five goals in 37 appearances across all competitions.
Southampton Era (2012–2020)
On 30 August 2012, Yoshida agreed to join newly promoted Premier League side Southampton on a three-year contract for a fee in the region of £3 million, linking up with former Nagoya teammate Tadanari Lee. He made his debut against Arsenal on 15 September 2012 and quickly became a first-team regular, forming a key centre-back partnership with José Fonte and helping the Saints avoid relegation by finishing 14th in his first season. In 2014, he scored his first Premier League goal in a 3–1 defeat at West Ham United.
On 8 January 2015, Southampton announced a contract extension that kept Yoshida at the club until 2018, and he helped the side finish seventh in the league to qualify for the UEFA Europa League. In 2016–17, he captained Southampton for the first time, reached the EFL Cup final, and became the first Japanese player to make 100 Premier League appearances during a 0–0 draw with Hull City on 29 April 2017. A further contract extension in August 2017 tied him to the club through 2020, and on 30 June 2020 he confirmed his departure after eight years of service.
Sampdoria Era (2020–2022)
Yoshida joined Italian Serie A side Sampdoria on loan in January 2020 before completing a permanent move later that summer. He became a fan favorite and partnered with Omar Colley and Lorenzo Tonelli at the back, also filling in at right-back when needed. He scored his first goal for the Blucerchiati on 24 January 2021 against Parma and added further goals against Inter Milan and Juventus during the 2021–22 season. His departure from Sampdoria was confirmed on 30 June 2022.
Schalke 04 Era (2022–2023)
On 5 July 2022, Yoshida joined Bundesliga side Schalke 04 on a free transfer, signing a one-year contract with an option for another year and becoming the third Japanese defender to play for the club, following Atsuto Uchida and Ko Itakura. He was handed the number 22 shirt worn by Uchida and was quickly installed as the team’s captain and first-choice centre-back. After the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, he led the club on an eight-match unbeaten run and helped keep four clean sheets between 29 January and 19 February 2023. He featured in 29 league games, but Schalke finished second-from-bottom and were relegated to the 2. Bundesliga before he left the club at the end of his contract.
LA Galaxy Era (2023–Present)
On 3 August 2023, Yoshida joined Major League Soccer club LA Galaxy on a free transfer, signing a contract through the end of the 2024 season. He made his debut on 26 August 2023 against Chicago Fire and scored his first Galaxy goal on 16 September 2023 in a 4–2 loss to Los Angeles FC. Ahead of the 2024 season, he was named LA Galaxy’s new captain following the departure of Javier Hernández, and on 22 April 2024 he scored in a 4–3 win over San Jose Earthquakes. Yoshida was crowned MLS champion after the New York Red Bulls were defeated in MLS Cup 2024.
Driving Style and Strengths
Although “driving style” is a motorsport term, in football terms Yoshida is recognized for his reading of the game, aerial strength, and consistent ball-playing ability from the back. He is most effective as a right-sided central defender who can step into midfield to build possession, while also being able to fill in at right-back or left-back when required. Throughout his Premier League career, his calmness under pressure and strong communication with goalkeepers and fellow defenders made him a natural organizational voice in the back line.
Notable Events and Milestones
Yoshida’s standout moments include his 2011 Eredivisie bicycle-kick Goal of the Season, his role in Southampton’s run to the 2017 EFL Cup final, and his 2017 milestone as the first Japanese player to reach 100 Premier League appearances. In 2024, he lifted the MLS Cup with LA Galaxy, becoming one of the few Japanese players to win a major North American league title.
