Early Career (2014–2016)

On April 1, 2014, the Los Angeles Kings signed Nicholas Dowd to an entry-level contract, assigning him to their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Manchester Monarchs. During the 2015–16 season, he made his NHL debut on March 22, 2016, playing five games before returning to the Ontario Reign. Dowd recorded his first career NHL goal on October 20, 2016, against the Dallas Stars.

Breakthrough (2017–Present)

In the 2017–18 season, Dowd was traded to the Vancouver Canucks on December 7, 2017, in exchange for Jordan Subban. He remained with the Canucks for the remainder of the season, scoring three goals in 40 games. After becoming a free agent, Dowd signed a one-year, $650,000 contract with the Washington Capitals on July 1, 2018. He later signed a three-year contract extension with the Capitals on April 11, 2019, and continued to play a significant role on the team. On November 14, 2021, Dowd signed a three-year, $3.9 million contract extension with the Capitals, followed by a two-year, $6 million contract extension on April 16, 2025.
