As a true freshman at Ball State, Jones made an immediate impact, totaling 18 tackles with four pass breakups while appearing in 12 games, two of which he started. In his sophomore season, he played in eight games, starting one, and recorded six tackles along with a blocked punt on special teams. Jones became a full-time starter in his junior year but faced a setback due to a season-ending knee injury after six games.
