Early Life and Background

Ryan Bates was born to parents Norman Bates and Theresa Strocen-Bates. He has a sister named Anna. Bates attended Archbishop Wood Catholic High School in Warminster Township, Pennsylvania, where he played as an offensive tackle for the Archbishop Wood Vikings. He helped lead the team to a PIAA Class AAA Championship in 2013, finishing with a 13-2 record, which earned him first team all-state selection honors for that season. The Vikings won the PIAA Class AAA Championship again in 2014, and Bates received First-team All-Philadelphia Catholic League honors in both 2013 and 2014. During his junior year, he was recognized as the 2014 Pennsylvania Football News Lineman of the Year and earned Under Armour All-America Game selection honors during his senior season in 2015 while serving as co-captain. Bates was rated a four-star recruit by both 247Sports and Rivals.com, receiving recruitment offers from several universities, including Virginia, Temple, Rutgers, Pittsburgh, Ohio State, Miami, Maryland, Duke, Boston College, Auburn, Georgia Tech, Illinois, South Carolina, and Penn State.

Ryan Bates committed to play college football at Penn State. After a true freshman season in 2015, he joined the field for the 2016 season as a redshirt freshman, starting in all 14 games and playing various positions on the offensive line, including left guard and left tackle. His performance during the 2016 season earned him multiple Big Ten honors, as well as All-American and Team of the Week recognitions. In his sophomore season in 2017, Bates started 8 of 10 games at left tackle but had to sit out several games due to injury. His junior season in 2018 saw him earn third-team All-Big Ten honors and additional Big Ten Teams of the Week accolades. Bates graduated from Penn State with a degree in Labor and Employment Relations.

Ryan Bates signed with the Philadelphia Eagles as an undrafted free agent on May 10, 2019. He was later traded to the Buffalo Bills on August 9, 2019, in exchange for linebacker Eli Harold. Bates made his first career start in Week 16 of the 2021 season at right guard, continuing to start for the remainder of the season and through the playoffs at left guard. On March 14, 2022, the Bills placed a restricted free agent tender on Bates, and on March 24, 2022, he signed an offer sheet with the Chicago Bears, which the Bills matched. Subsequently, on April 4, 2022, Bates signed a four-year contract worth $17 million with the Bills.
