Ryan Cole Gusto is an American professional baseball pitcher for the Miami Marlins of Major League Baseball (MLB). He has previously played in MLB for the Houston Astros. Gusto played college baseball at Florida SouthWestern State College and was selected by the Astros in the 11th round of the 2019 MLB draft. He made his MLB debut in 2025 with the Astros.
Early Life and Background
Ryan Gusto was born on March 11, 1999. He attended Providence High School in Charlotte, North Carolina, where he played on his high school’s baseball team for only one year. Instead, he played for the homeschool baseball team, the Carolina Royals, leading a team that included four Division I and twelve Division II collegiate baseball commitments to a remarkable 34-4 record during his junior season. Gusto received a walk-on offer to play college baseball at Broward College but transferred to Florida SouthWestern State College after his freshman year.

Gusto’s journey to professional baseball began when he was drafted by the Houston Astros in the 11th round of the 2019 Major League Baseball draft. He spent his first professional season split between the rookie-level Gulf Coast League Astros and Low-A Tri-City ValleyCats. In 2023, he made 26 appearances for Asheville and the Double-A Corpus Christi Hooks, registering a combined 7-4 record and a 4.50 ERA with 115 strikeouts over 110 innings. In 2024, he pitched for the Sugar Land Space Cowboys of the Triple-A Pacific Coast League, where he was named the PCL’s Pitcher of the Month for July. Gusto compiled an 8-6 record and a 3.70 ERA with 141 strikeouts across 148.1 innings pitched.
Breakthrough (2025)
Gusto was selected to the Houston Astros’ 40-man roster on September 29, 2024, and was promoted to the major leagues. However, he did not make his debut due to the cancellation of the season finale. He began the 2025 season optioned to Triple-A Sugar Land but secured a spot on Houston’s Opening Day roster on March 24, 2025. Gusto made his major league debut on March 31, 2025, against the San Francisco Giants, where he pitched two scoreless innings. He earned his first major league win on April 8, 2025, in a 2-1 victory over the Seattle Mariners, contributing a scoreless effort in the 11th inning.
