Samuel Degarrick Williams (born March 31, 1999) is an American professional football defensive end for the Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the Northeast Mississippi Tigers before transferring to the Ole Miss Rebels. Williams has made a name for himself in the NFL since being drafted in 2022 and has shown significant potential on the field.

Early Life and Background

Samuel Degarrick Williams was born in Mobile, Alabama. He faced challenges during his childhood, as he and his siblings were taken from their mother and raised by their grandparents and later by an aunt after the age of seven. Williams attended Marbury High School, where he initially played basketball before transferring to Robert E. Lee High School in Montgomery, Alabama. At Robert E. Lee, he played defensive line and had the opportunity to play alongside future professional football player Henry Ruggs III.

Path to American Football

After high school, Williams enrolled at Northeast Mississippi Community College. During his freshman year in 2017, he appeared in nine games, collecting 53 tackles, 11 for loss, and 3.5 sacks. He continued to excel in his sophomore year, registering 75 tackles and 17.5 sacks, which tied for the most in the nation among junior colleges. His performance earned him first-team NJCAA All-American honors and recognition as the MACJC Defensive Lineman of the Year. After his success at Northeast Mississippi, Williams transferred to the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) to continue his college football career.

Williams was selected by the Dallas Cowboys with the 56th overall pick in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft. In his rookie season, he appeared in 15 games, making 19 tackles, 4 sacks, and tying for a team-high with 3 fumble recoveries. His performance against the Detroit Lions was particularly notable, where he recorded 3 tackles, 2 sacks, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery in just 12 snaps.

Breakthrough (2023)

In the 2023 season, Williams played in 17 games as a backup defensive end, collecting 20 tackles and 4.5 sacks, ranking third on the team. He also made significant contributions on special teams, including blocking a punt against the Los Angeles Rams that resulted in a safety. Williams showcased his ability to perform under pressure by recording a sack in three consecutive games against the Philadelphia Eagles, New York Giants, and Carolina Panthers.
