Seamus Casey Bio

Seamus Casey (born January 8, 2004) is an American professional ice hockey player who is a defenseman for the Utica Comets of the American Hockey League (AHL) as a prospect to the New Jersey Devils of the National Hockey League (NHL). He was drafted in the second round, 46th overall, by the Devils in the 2022 NHL entry draft.

Early Life and Background

Seamus Casey was born in Miami, Florida, to Steve and Karen Casey. When he was around five years old, the family moved to Fort Myers, Florida, where he met future Columbus Blue Jackets draft pick Gavin Brindley. The two became close friends and played youth, junior, and collegiate ice hockey together. At the age of twelve, Casey moved to Detroit to join the Compuware Youth Hockey AAA program, which provided him with a solid foundation in competitive hockey.

Path to Hockey

While playing for Compuware, Casey was scouted by the University of Michigan during a game where he was moved to forward due to injuries. He committed to Michigan in October 2018. Although he was drafted by the Sarnia Sting of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), he opted to play for the USA Hockey National Team Development Program (NTDP) instead, preserving his NCAA eligibility. In the 2020–21 season with the NTDP, Casey led U17 team defensemen with 36 points and 28 assists in 48 games. He returned to the NTDP for the 2021–22 season, scoring 33 points in 48 games, ranking second among defensemen on the U18 team. He was selected to attend the 2023 USA Hockey All-American Game, showcasing his talent as one of the top draft-eligible junior players in the United States.
