Shane Jeffrey Smith was born on April 4, 2000. He attended The Governor’s Academy in Byfield, Massachusetts, where he began to develop his skills in baseball. Following high school, Smith continued his education and athletic career at Wake Forest University, playing college baseball for the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. His time at these institutions laid the foundation for his future in professional baseball.
Path to Baseball
After completing his education, Shane Smith faced a significant challenge when he underwent Tommy John surgery in 2021. Despite this setback, he persevered and signed with the Milwaukee Brewers as an undrafted free agent on July 27, 2021, after going unselected in the 2021 MLB draft. During the 2023 season, Smith split his time between the Single-A Carolina Mudcats, High-A Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, and Double-A Biloxi Shuckers. He compiled an impressive 7–4 win-loss record and a 1.96 earned run average (ERA) with 86 strikeouts and 10 saves across 59+2⁄3 innings pitched. His performance earned him recognition, and he was named the Brewers’ minor league pitcher of the month for May 2024 while pitching for Biloxi.
Breakthrough (2025)
On December 11, 2024, the Chicago White Sox selected Shane Smith from the Brewers with the first selection of the Rule 5 draft. He made the White Sox’s Opening Day roster on March 20, 2025, and made his MLB debut on April 1, 2025. Smith recorded his first career win on April 24, 2025, after pitching five scoreless innings against the Minnesota Twins, striking out seven batters. His outstanding performance throughout the season led to his selection for the 2025 MLB All-Star Game, making him only the second player to be named an All-Star in the season following their Rule 5 selection.
