Stefan Frei (born 20 April 1986) is a Swiss professional footballer who plays as a goalkeeper for Major League Soccer club Seattle Sounders FC. Born in Altstätten, Switzerland, Frei moved with his family to the United States as a teenager and has spent his entire professional career in Major League Soccer. Standing 6 ft 3 in (1.91 m) tall, he is widely regarded as one of the most consistent shot-stoppers of his generation.
After developing in the youth system of his Swiss hometown and later at De La Salle High School in California, Frei played college soccer for the California Golden Bears at the University of California, Berkeley. Stefan Frei was born on 20 April 1986 in Altstätten, a town in the St. Gallen region of Switzerland. In the 2016 MLS Cup Final against his former club Toronto FC, Frei made seven saves in regular play and another in the penalty shoot-out, which Seattle won 5-4 following a 0-0 draw after extra time. His stop on Jozy Altidore’s header in extra time was later described as one of the best saves in MLS Cup history, and Frei was named MLS Cup 2016 Most Valuable Player.

Frei became a United States citizen on 13 June 2017. He lives with his wife, Jennifer, and two dogs on Bainbridge Island, Washington. In his spare time, Frei has taken up painting and has collaborated with companies and charitable organizations on his artwork.
