William “Will” Borgen is an American professional ice hockey player who is a defenseman for the New York Rangers of the National Hockey League (NHL). He was drafted by the Buffalo Sabres in the fourth round, 92nd overall, of the 2015 NHL entry draft. Borgen began his career with Moorhead High School and played collegiate hockey at St. Cloud State University before joining the Sabres organization. After stints with the Buffalo Sabres and Seattle Kraken, Borgen was traded to the Rangers, showcasing his skills as a notable defenseman in the league.

William Borgen was born on December 19, 1996, in Moorhead, Minnesota. Growing up in a community where hockey was a prominent sport, he began playing at a young age. Borgen started his hockey career with Moorhead High School, where he played for three years and gained valuable experience competing in the Minnesota State High School League. Path to Hockey

During his time at Moorhead High School, Borgen demonstrated significant talent, which led him to join the Omaha Lancers of the United States Hockey League (USHL) after his high school career. Following his stint with the Lancers, he opted to further his development by attending St. Cloud State University, where he played for the St. Cloud State Huskies in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC). Borgen’s professional career began when he signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Buffalo Sabres on March 25, 2018. He spent the initial part of his contract with the Sabres’ American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Rochester Americans. Borgen made his NHL debut with the Sabres on March 26, 2019, against the Ottawa Senators. Over the next two seasons, he played a total of 10 games with the Sabres, contributing to the team’s defensive lineup.

Breakthrough (2021–2025)

In July 2021, Borgen was selected by the Seattle Kraken in the NHL expansion draft. He signed a two-year contract with the Kraken and scored his first NHL goal on January 2, 2022. Borgen’s performance improved significantly during the 2022–23 season, where he recorded a career-high of three goals and 17 assists over 82 games. He also made a notable impact in the playoffs, scoring his first playoff goal in a crucial game against the Colorado Avalanche.
