Zachary Dunn Gelof (born October 19, 1999) is an American professional baseball player and an infielder for the Oakland Athletics of Major League Baseball. Gelof played college baseball for the University of Virginia Cavaliers, was selected by the Oakland Athletics in the second round of the 2021 MLB draft, and made his major league debut with the Athletics in July 2023.
Early Life and Background
Gelof grew up in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, and attended Cape Henlopen High School, where he was a four-year starter on the baseball team and served as class president each year. He finished his high school baseball career as Delaware’s all-time leader in runs scored and stolen bases, led the state in hits, runs and home runs as a senior, and was named the 2018 Delaware Gatorade Player of the Year.
Gelof also starred as a high school soccer player, finishing as the state’s leading scorer across his four-year career, and graduated with strong academic marks. His family includes his parents, Adam and Kelly Gelof, both attorneys, and his younger brother Jake Gelof, who played at the University of Virginia and was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Path to Baseball
After high school Gelof enrolled at the University of Virginia and became a regular starter for the Virginia Cavaliers, beginning his collegiate career at third base. He developed into a well-rounded hitter and baserunner, earning preseason honors in 2021 and playing a key role for Virginia in the 2021 College World Series, where he was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Gelof boosted his prospect profile with summer league performances, including stints in the Northwoods League and the Coastal Plain League, before being selected in the second round, 60th overall, by the Oakland Athletics in the 2021 MLB draft. He signed with Oakland in July 2021 and began his professional career that season in the Athletics system.
Zack Gelof Career
Early Career (2021–2022)
Gelof began his professional career in 2021 with a brief assignment to the Arizona Complex League Athletics before moving to the Low-A Stockton Ports and then to the Las Vegas Aviators at Triple-A. Across those stops in 2021 he combined to hit .333/.422/.565 with seven home runs and 13 stolen bases in 138 at bats, drawing attention for his bat-to-ball skills and speed on the bases.
In 2022 Gelof advanced to Double-A with the Midland RockHounds, where he posted a .271/.356/.438 line with 13 home runs and nine stolen bases in 83 games despite missing almost seven weeks after a torn labrum and a subluxed left shoulder. He played multiple positions that year, including second base, third base and occasional outfield duty, and finished the year with a short stint at Triple-A Las Vegas.
College Breakthrough (2019–2021)
As a Cavaliers starter, Gelof was a consistent offensive contributor over three seasons, batting .316/.396/.478 in 137 games for Virginia. His sophomore 2020 season was cut short by the coronavirus pandemic after a strong start in which he led the ACC in slugging, and in 2021 he led the ACC in hits and helped Virginia reach the College World Series.
Gelof earned All-ACC recognition and preseason All-American honors, while his College World Series performance in 2021 earned him a place on the All-Tournament Team after hitting over .500 in the event. Those college credentials were a major factor in his early-round selection in the 2021 MLB draft.
Athletics Breakthrough (2023–2024)
Gelof made his major league debut for the Oakland Athletics on July 14, 2023. He recorded his first big-league home run on July 22, 2023, against Ryne Stanek of the Houston Astros and quickly established himself as an impactful rookie with a mix of power and speed.
During his rookie stretch Gelof set several franchise marks for early-career production, becoming the fastest Athletics player to reach six home runs and later the fastest in franchise history to reach 10 home runs. He finished the 2023 season batting .267/.337/.504 with 14 home runs and 14 stolen bases in 69 games and was named American League Rookie of the Month for August 2023.
Current Team Era (2025–Present)
The 2025 season was interrupted for Gelof by a right hamate bone fracture that required surgery and a later season-ending dislocated left shoulder that also required surgery, limiting him to 30 major league games that year. He returned to play at Triple-A Las Vegas during the year and produced power and run production in the Pacific Coast League before the major league injuries curtailed his season.
In 2026 Gelof began the season in Triple-A before a call-up to Oakland. Early in the 2026 season he produced a long hitting streak and scored runs at a sustained clip before suffering a right-hand contusion following a fielding incident that placed him on the injured list. He has continued to split time between second base, other infield spots and the outfield as needed.
Driving Style and Strengths
Gelof combines above-average speed with nascent power, producing a strong power-speed profile through his first major league seasons. Scouts and club personnel have cited his athleticism and strength, and he has shown range and active defensive metrics at second base while posting high stolen-base success rates early in his career.
Notable Events and Milestones
Key milestones include Gelof’s MLB debut on July 14, 2023; his first major league homer on July 22, 2023; franchise records for early-career home run totals; an AL Rookie of the Month award in August 2023; and a notable hitting streak and run-scoring streak early in the 2026 season that ranked among franchise highs before an in-game hand injury ended both runs.
Zack Gelof Career Wins
Through June 19, 2026, Gelof’s major league totals included 44 home runs, 118 runs batted in, and a .236 batting average. He has combined those totals with double-digit stolen base seasons and defensive metrics that placed him among American League leaders at second base in range and putouts during the 2024 season.
