Zack Gelof Says He’s Healthy and Ready for Spring Training

Zack Gelof reported on Wednesday that he is feeling fully recovered and prepared to participate in spring training this year, according to Jason Burke of SI.com. After undergoing surgery on his left shoulder last season, Gelof expects to rejoin his team without restrictions as the Athletics begin their preseason activities.

Rookie Year Challenges and Injury Setbacks

Gelof showed promise during his rookie season in 2023 by hitting 14 home runs and stealing 14 bases over 69 games, positioning himself as a key player in the Athletics’ rebuild. However, persistent injuries and difficulties with consistent hitting against major league pitching complicated his progress. He made his 2025 major league debut in early July after recovering from a fractured right wrist and rib stress reaction, but struggled at the plate, posting a .174 batting average with a 45.5 percent strikeout rate across 101 plate appearances. Concerns over his health culminated in a dislocated left shoulder that ended his season early in September.

Outlook for the Upcoming Season and Team Role

Following shoulder surgery, Gelof appears to have regained his health, but he faces pressure to perform well during the Cactus League games. A strong showing will be critical to secure a spot on the Athletics’ Opening Day roster and demonstrate that he can overcome previous inconsistencies to contribute meaningfully to the team. His readiness will be closely watched as spring training unfolds.
