Pickleball Fundraiser Delivers Big: How Players Came Together for Change!

Pickleball Fundraiser Delivers Big: On September 21 and 22, McAdam Park came alive with the spirit of camaraderie as more than 130 pickleball players gathered for the second annual Foster the Love Pickleball Tournament. This pickleball event not only showed the skills of participants from Bakersfield, Apple Valley, and Santa Clarita, but it also served a greater purpose: honoring the legacy of Christina Loukatos, a dedicated school counselor who left an indelible mark on her community before her untimely passing.

A Tribute to Christina Loukatos

The pickleball tournament was more than just a competition; it was a heartfelt tribute to Loukatos, who passed away at the age of 35. Known for her commitment to helping others, Christina was a guiding light for her younger siblings, whom she cared for after leaving foster care. As players took to the court in various divisions—mixed, men’s, and women’s doubles—the air was thick with memories of her advocacy and dedication to education.

Before her death, Christina had recently completed a second master’s degree in school administration, showing her relentless pursuit of knowledge and her desire to uplift others. The scholarship funded by the tournament will be awarded annually to a foster student, ensuring that Christina’s legacy continues to inspire and support those in need. It’s a touching reminder of how sports can weave together the threads of community and compassion.

Community Spirit Shines Bright

The enthusiasm of the pickleball community was evident, with players competing at various skill levels—beginner, intermediate, and advanced. The tournament raised approximately $6,500 through raffle and registration fees, all of which will go directly to the Antelope Valley College Foundation for the Christina Loukatos scholarship. This incredible achievement shows the collective effort of everyone involved, from players to sponsors.

Tournament Director Stacy Bryant expressed her gratitude, stating,

“The proceeds from this weekend’s tournament helped us reach our initial goal of endowing one scholarship in Christina’s name, and we are well on our way to endowing a second scholarship thanks to the support of our sponsors and the pickleball players who have generously supported the tournament, especially Toyota of Lancaster.”

This sentiment resonates with the players, who understand that their participation contributes to a cause larger than the game itself.

Support from Local Businesses and Sponsors

The event was supported by the generosity of various sponsors and local businesses. Notable names like Selkirk Sports, Joola, and USA Pickleball SERVES joined hands with local supporters like Pure Oasis Water and Cinemark Theatres, contributing to the tournament’s success. Their involvement highlights the significance of community support in the world of sports, especially in initiatives that aim to give back.

As the tournament concluded, the sense of achievement was noticeable. Players left not just with memories of competition, but with a renewed sense of purpose. They had played for a cause that resonates deeply within the pickleball community, reminding everyone that every point scored on the court can translate into opportunities for others off the court.
