New Pickleball Courts Open in River John: After two and a half years of fundraising, volunteer work, and support from all three levels of government, the River John Pickleball Club (RJPC) has celebrated the opening of its new outdoor pickleball courts. Located on the grounds of the local Legion branch, this new green space is now a hub for one of North America’s fastest-growing sports.
Volunteers, along with over 130 members, contributed by digging trenches for lighting, clearing and cleaning the area, and installing essential amenities such as bathrooms and shade facilities.
Temporary Solutions and Community Impact
During the transition period, the River John Fire Department (RJFD) played a crucial role by providing space for games during colder months until the outdoor courts were ready. The RJPC members have shown their gratitude by contributing more than $12,000 to the fire department over the past year. “What a great active day,” Warden Robert Parker said, highlighting the event’s reflection of strong community spirit.
Pickleball’s Rise and Personal Stories
Pickleball has surged in popularity over the last decade due to its physical and mental health benefits, attracting players of all ages. For some, the sport has been life-changing, offering both active living and social opportunities. RJPC member Elaine Langille shared, “I retired in 2023 and pickleball has allowed me to stay connected to my community.”
Funding and Future Plans
The outdoor courts were financed through a combination of grants and donations. Key contributors included Sport Nova Scotia, the Government of Canada’s New Horizons For Seniors grant, the province’s Strategic Fund Grant, and the Municipality of Pictou County. Additional support came from the YMCA of Pictou County, which plans to introduce pickleball programming later this year, as well as various individual and corporate donors.
Municipal councillor Mary Elliott expressed her enthusiasm for the new facility, saying, “I’m so excited. This site is amazing.” The courts will be open for fall leisure play and are expected to integrate River John with other pickleball-friendly communities across Canada. Membership to the RJPC includes registration with Pickleball Canada and Pickleball Nova Scotia, covering player insurance and other benefits.
Community Engagement and Future Developments
Mike Topley, president of the Royal Canadian Legion River John Branch 108, expressed his satisfaction with the new facility, stating, “Well, we got it done. And there’s more to come, we’re just getting started.” MP for Central Nova, Sean Fraser, who attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony, emphasized the community’s role in making the project possible, saying, “It’s the people who come up with the ideas. This is part of what makes our great communities worth living in.”
Donations for further improvements such as additional lighting, walkways, and general maintenance are still being accepted. Contributions can be sent to RJPC treasurer John Carruthers, with the Municipality of Pictou County providing charitable tax receipts for donations over $100.
