North Bay’s Pickleball Courts Shine in a New Era

North Bay’s Pickleball Courts: The City of North Bay has made a significant upgrade for local pickleball enthusiasts by resurfacing eight pickleball courts at Bourke Playground. Transitioning from asphalt pickleball courts to a new surface has enhanced player experience, providing a truer bounce and improved traction.

A Growing Need for Quality Courts

Pickleball, a sport blending elements of tennis and ping pong, attracts competitors of all ages. As participation surged, local demand for better pickleball facilities became evident. While the city opted not to build new courts, the refurbishment of existing ones was a strategic move, costing approximately $350,000.

Chris Derochie, a director at North Bay Pickleball, expressed his enthusiasm for the resurfacing project, which is set to enhance the courts for the 2025 season.

With the help of (Mayor) Peter Chirico and the staff at the City of North Bay, we were able to design and refurbish these courts to be premier (level) courts. These courts are as good as you’re going to find in the world,” Derochie stated.

Facilities for the Future

Derochie emphasized the importance of these courts, not just for local play but also for hosting tournaments. He noted a growing trend of converting tennis courts into pickleball facilities across Canada.

I’m seeing tennis courts behind changed into pickleball courts around Canada,” he said. “It is the ‘in’ sport now; it is a lot of fun and a very social sport.

While the courts look impressive, there are currently no permanent poles for pickleball nets. Derochie explained that concerns about bedrock in the area have led to this temporary arrangement, but solutions are in the works.

We have been talking to different companies in Canada; they are now developing net dividers that are portable,” he added.

Excitement Builds for Upcoming Competitions

Michelle Cundari, president of the local pickleball club, is gearing up for the Pickleball World Championships later this year. Cundari noted that approximately 270 players registered for events this summer.

It is a beautiful space to play,” she remarked, taking in the vibrant colors and dimensions of the newly resurfaced courts. “We now have a beautiful surface with beautiful colors. This is my first time seeing this, and it is very exciting.

Cundari also highlighted that the upgraded facility positions North Bay to host more tournaments in the coming years, further solidifying the city’s status in the pickleball community.
