Shavkat Rakhmonov Bio

Shavkat Bakhtibaevich Rakhmonov, born on October 23, 1994, is a Kazakh professional mixed martial artist who competes in the Welterweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). Widely known by his ring name “Nomad,” he has built a perfect professional record of 19 wins and no losses, with eight victories by knockout and ten by submission. He is recognized as the first Kazakh fighter ever signed to the UFC roster.

Fighting out of Kokshetau, Kazakhstan, Rakhmonov represents DAR Pro Team Kill Cliff FC and holds the rank of Master of Sport in both Combat Sambo and MMA. A professional since 2014, he has also captured regional titles under M-1 Global and the Kazakhstan Mixed Martial Arts Federation (KZMMAF).

Early Life and Background

Shavkat Bakhtibaevich Rakhmonov was born on October 23, 1994, in the city of Shoʻrchi, located in the Surxondaryo Region of Uzbekistan, into a Kazakh family. His father belongs to the Altynbay clan, and his mother is a Kazakh of the Konyrat tribe. Rakhmonov himself is from the Altynbai clan of the Alimuly tribe within the Junior Zhuz, a traditional Kazakh lineage that has shaped his cultural identity and his nickname “Nomad.”

Growing up in a sporting family environment, Rakhmonov was introduced to wrestling and combat sports at a young age, which laid the foundation for his later transition into mixed martial arts. His early training focused on grappling, particularly sambo, before he expanded into broader MMA disciplines. These formative years built the technical base that would later make him a dangerous finisher in the UFC.

Path to MMA

As an amateur, Rakhmonov quickly established himself on the international stage, winning both the WMMAA World Championship and the WMMAA Asian Championship. At just 18 years old, he became a world amateur champion in 2013, and in 2014 he added the Asian MMA title to his résumé. He finished as runner-up in the WMMAA World Championship twice, in 2014 and 2015, both times losing to Gadzhimurad Khiramagomedov, who remains the only fighter to have defeated him in an MMA bout.

Rakhmonov turned professional in October 2014, debuting with a first-round triangle choke victory over Adam Tsurov at M-1 Challenge 52. Over the next several years, he competed primarily under the M-1 banner and in his home country’s KZMMAF promotion, capturing both the KZMMAF Welterweight Championship and the M-1 Global Welterweight Championship. These regional successes earned him the nickname “Nomad” and prepared him for the biggest stage in the sport.

Shavkat Rakhmonov Career

Early Career (2014–2020)

Following his professional debut in late 2014, Rakhmonov built his record across M-1 Global and the KZMMAF, alternating between the two promotions. He won the KZMMAF Welterweight title with a third-round TKO of Faridun Odilov and later defended regional belts, including a first-round stoppage of Rinat Sayakbaev at Battle of Nomads 11 in December 2018.

In early 2019, Rakhmonov captured the vacant M-1 Welterweight Championship with a second-round TKO of Daniil Prikaza at M-1 Challenge 101. He followed that with a first-round stoppage of Tiago Varejão at M-1 Challenge 102 to defend the M-1 title, completing his regional résumé and positioning himself for a move to the UFC.

UFC Breakthrough (2020–2022)

Rakhmonov became the first Kazakh fighter to sign with the UFC, though his debut was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic. He finally entered the Octagon in October 2020 at UFC 254, submitting Alex Oliveira via guillotine choke in the first round after Oliveira missed weight. He followed that with a second-round rear-naked choke of Michel Prazeres at UFC Fight Night 190 in June 2021.

In February 2022, Rakhmonov earned his first knockout inside the UFC, stopping Carlston Harris in round one at UFC Fight Night 200, a performance that earned him the Performance of the Night bonus. He closed the year with a second-round guillotine choke of veteran Neil Magny at UFC on ESPN 38, collecting another Performance of the Night award and cementing his reputation as a fast-rising contender.

DAR Pro Team Kill Cliff FC Era (2021–Present)

Since joining DAR Pro Team Kill Cliff FC in 2021, Rakhmonov has continued his unbeaten run while training alongside established MMA talents. In March 2023 at UFC 285, he submitted Geoff Neal via rear-naked choke in the third round, claiming his first Fight of the Night bonus. Later that year, at UFC 296 in December 2023, he produced one of the signature moments of his career, submitting Stephen Thompson with a rear-naked choke with only four seconds remaining in the second round, becoming the first fighter ever to finish Thompson by submission.

In December 2024 at UFC 310, Rakhmonov headlined a five-round title eliminator against Ian Machado Garry after champion Belal Muhammad withdrew due to a bone infection. Rakhmonov won by unanimous decision, his first career victory to go the distance, reinforcing his status at the top of the welterweight division.

Style and Strengths

Rakhmonov is widely regarded as one of the most well-rounded welterweights in the UFC, blending elite sambo-based grappling with crisp striking. The majority of his finishes have come by submission, particularly through rear-naked chokes and guillotine chokes, while he has also demonstrated knockout power. His calm finishing instinct and ability to adapt mid-fight have become defining traits of his performances inside the cage.

Notable Events and Milestones

Key milestones in Rakhmonov’s career include becoming the first Kazakh UFC signee, capturing M-1 Global and KZMMAF welterweight titles, and earning multiple Performance of the Night and Fight of the Night bonuses. His last-second submission of Stephen Thompson at UFC 296 stands as the most dramatic finish of his career, and his title-eliminator win over Ian Machado Garry at UFC 310 pushed him firmly into the championship conversation.

2025 Season Performance

Heading into 2025, Shavkat Rakhmonov was widely considered the next title challenger in the UFC welterweight division following his December 2024 win over Ian Machado Garry. However, an injury prevented him from competing for the championship against then-champion Belal Muhammad at UFC 315, and he remained on the sidelines while recovering.

By January 2026, it was reported that Rakhmonov’s knee injury would keep him out of action for approximately nine to ten months, and he was removed from the number-two spot in the welterweight rankings as a result. Despite the setback, his unbeaten record, finishing rate, and championship-eliminator résumé left him well positioned to re-enter the title picture once healthy.
